Changing item types

Let me clarify: currently almost all my items are in the "Login" category whereas many of them actually belong to a different category, like "Server" or "WiFi".

Hi @maratm,
At this time, it is not possible to change an item's type. This is because each category is designed with specific default fields (particularly the ones that fill your data in on websites.) We've heard requests from users before who would like to have the ability to do this, and I'm happy to add your vote to the issue in our internal tracker. In the meantime, 1Password mini has a handy anchor feature that allows you to 'pin' an item's details to your screen. This will make it easy for you to copy and paste your details from the existing entry into a new entry in the category that you wish.
I know it's not a perfect answer, but I hope that it helps!

Hello Megan,
Thank you for your reply. No big deal, I was just thinking about organizing my item collection better. But it doesn't really affect the actual use, because I'm using the search function anyway.

Hmnn, patience indeed, from 2011, a previous response
"Hi Jackenstein, We are looking into making it possible to change an item's type within 1Password, however I don't have a timeframe for when this will be available."
Great software, but for users who have been with 1Password since the early days and have bundles of logins and "secure notes" that really belong in other categories now, this would be a pretty valuable feature.
Come on, this isn't particularly "Agile", three years and counting.
Stephen.

Hi @sdes
Our developers haven't forgotten but my understanding is the hardcoded types means a massive change to the codebase rather than any small fix. We do understand that everybody would really love to see it though.

Here's a +1 for adding this feature. Since making this change would require massive changes to the codebase, how about offering a popup that allows the user to map the fields between the 2 different card types copy over information? Once the new card is complete, the user could manually delete the old card.

A +1 from me too - as well as the ability to import from SplashID

Hi @simonjr,
I don't to get off-topic here, but wanted to briefly mention that 1Password already has the ability to import from SplashID: Importing your data
You can use the built-in importer in 1Password, or (as explained further down in that same article) you can try the data converters. For more information about the data converters, please check out the following forum discussion: MrC's Convert to 1Password Utility
If you need help to import from SplashID, please feel free to start a new discussion and we'll be glad to help. Thanks! :)

This is something I really want to see, changing item types!

I've noted your desire for this request @giantJELLYFISH

+1 from me too.
Actually, I would be happy if changing type meant that ALL fields where dumped in the notes field of the target type. Then I could easily copy and paste within that same item from the notes to the correct fields. That would save me a ton of tedious work compared to what I have to do today.

Hi @Adrian B,
Interesting idea, I can see how while it might not be ideal it would at least be something. Certainly bouncing between two items is pretty laborious even through my limited usage here. I shall add your voice to the request too.

+1 for somehow making this easier. I have a huge bundle of imported items that are really just a label + password but moving them all from "Login" items to "Password" items is a crazy time sink and error prone (not a good thing in secrets management). If nothing else at least let me open two 1Passwd windows so I can cut and paste without repeatedly searching and scrolling.

Hi @bob_smith,
I've added your vote. Now there might be a small trick we can use to make it a little easier for you. Start by creating a new item in the main 1Password window and then while still in edit mode use the keyboard shortcut
⌥⌘\
to open 1Password mini. Navigate to the existing item you want to copy the details from and with the Item Details bubble visible, click on the anchor button in the bottom left hand corner. This will anchor the Item Details and allow you to more easily copy and paste between the existing item and the new one. Does that help a bit?ref: OPM-1643
