master password failure ???
Suddenly this evening, my master password no longer works. I know exactly what the password is, and it's not working. I tried restarting the computer, but still no go. How do I fix this?? OSX 10.1.1, 1Password ver. 3.8.22

Same issue. Started around 7PM EST. Affecting all my devices. 10.9 using version 4.4.3 on MacPro, iMac and MacbookPro. As well as Android app and iPad app.
I'm kinda dependent on the app, and I'm dead in the water.

Caps lock? Accents? Changed language of keyboard? These are among the common issues if a password you KNOW is correct no longer works.

See also this knowledge base article. One good tip is to type your master password in clear text in a note then copy and paste it into 1P and see if that works.

So, the master password is the same that I use at work to login to our main systems. I change the password on both services (work and 1password) at the same time every 41 days as is prescribed by our work system administrators. This morning I wrote my password in TextEdit and pasted it into the server entry screen for work, and I got in... then pasted it into 1password, no go, then pasted it into the HTML backup site in Dropbox, no go.
I've restored to 7 different backups on my iMac, and the same on my MacPro.... no go.
My password is not being accepted anywhere.

Also, my license on all three machines have mysteriously changed to trial expired. I've put the licenses back in. But it's made no difference.
I don't wanna sound pessimistic, but this is kinda catastrophic.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having trouble here, and I certainly don't blame you for being a bit stressed over this! You mention changing your Master Password frequently. Have you changed it recently? If so, have you tried the previous Master Password?

Please note that this is not really recommended behaviour. Your Master Password should be unique - it should not be used for any other service, and you should really pick a nice, strong, memorable one and never change it. If you'd like to learn more about Master Passwords, have a read-through our security guru's blog post: Towards Better Master Passwords.

Hi Megan, we're halfway through the password cycle. It worked that some day.
I'm kinda seething at the lack of feedback from the company other than your telling me that my password habits may be responsible for my losing access to over 1500 passwords that I use for my work. That's not the issue.
1password systematically failing on every device it is used on IS the issue. I paid dollars for your product, I have been a user for a long time. Your product has served me well and I have recommended it on many occasions. I think from a karma level at the very least I can expect a reasonable amount of support. I have done my due diligence and have done steps in your knowledge base and ran through your documentation and searched your discussion board.
So can I have some potential solutions?

When you say you've tried 7 different backups can I ask, what period of time did those backups span and how many of your last x passwords did you try on each? (I'm assuming and hoping you remember some of your previous ones although I know I wouldn't).
Prior to this issue, had you confirmed that your new password was working on all the machines/devices that you use? There are two reasons I ask.
- We have a bug that we're working on killing where a Master Password change isn't picked up by other devices during sync. Until we get that annoying bug resolved the workaround we recommend is to manually change the Master Password on each device. As you can see, it might mean your old password is still in effect unless you're stating the new password was working everywhere and now it isn't.
- Due to the fact that there is your local vault and the sync data and how the encryption works your old Master Password would continue to unlock your local vault on your devices until a successful sync. So if we can't access that sync data your old Master Password should still be in effect.
You also can't change the Master Password without supplying a hint. Did you tend to keep the hint something that would identify which Master Password applied or did you tend to use the same hint each time? I'm just wondering if it could help pin what MP was being requested.
Based on something else I've seen recently, and this really is nothing more than a gut feeling, I wonder about the following. Even if locked you can enter 1Password's preferences. If you do that and go to the Security tab you can change your Master Password. If you do that with the MP that is being refused does it also say there it's the wrong MP?
Please let us know if any of that works.

@richshipley Did Stephen_C's post with the link help at all for you?

Hi tables.
Backed up passwords: I has previously managed to go just within the period since the password change. However, I called a friend in our IT department and he was able to find my last password. Which I tried using with a restored backup from around when I used that password. It did not work either.
Did the password work: The password had worked right up until about 7pm that day. Previous to that, I had used the password about 2 dozen times that day alone.
Password hint: yup it shows the right password, that hint helps a lot in the first few days after the change, I'm dependent on it to remember,
Changing password: It didn't let me change it, sadly.
I've screencast my attempting most of these for your benefit.

Can you check the following please on every machine. In System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources, do you have more than one keyboard set up? I realise you might have checked already but I just want to confirm, partly out of desperation.
Assuming that yields nothing. You have your current password, your old one is probably still fresh in your head as it's only a couple of days old and your friend managed to help you with the password prior to that, is that correct? So you know your last 3 passwords.
All I can think to suggest is to systematically test every backup, from newest to oldest^ with all 3 passwords. Type each onto a single line in a text document or into separate windows, whichever works for you, check and double check them and then rely on cut and paste. Test each backup in turn with all three, confirming the password hint is changing where appropriate and makes sense for when that backup would have happened.
^ When I say oldest I don't mean to suggest going back until the very oldest which may be months and months old but I would seriously test a solid 3/4 more than would make sense under normal circumstances.
Please do let us know the results of that, I'm sorry I don't have anything more solid to suggest at the moment.
