Need more flexable password recipes

I created a new account with an online bank. I'm attaching an image of their requirements. At least they allow long passwords, two alpha cases, numbers and "some" symbols, but they don't allow "all" symbols. Other sites are even more restrictive. As an IT administrator, I have a hard time understanding the difficulty for any of these online sites to just allow the most complex passwords out there, but unfortunately that is the state of the Internet these days.

It would be nice for the password generator to have an advanced section where you can choose what types of special characters are allowable as well as any of the other common restrictions for other sites.

Thanks,

Kazooless

    Hi @kazooless,

Thanks for your feedback about that! I can't make any promises of course, but I can certainly send your request to our developers.

If you need anything else, just let us know. :)

I was looking to see if that question had been posted before I doubled up on it. I would also like to see this if possible as I have several login in sites that request special symbols, but each site the symbols are not the same. So allowing picking of what is needed would be nice.

    Hi @Elj6492,

Thanks for letting us know! I'll be happy to add your feedback to the existing feature request. We appreciate the feedback! :)

When I register on websites like these, I would just use my normal recipe and then replaced the symbols not allowed with other ones manually.

Since this doesn't happen too often, I myself find this temporary solution feasible.

Thanks @vicjang! That's a good point, and it's worth reiterating that it's possible to manually edit the generated password before clicking the Fill button. While that's not as convenient as having that happen randomly with the password generator itself, it could be a helpful workaround for now. Thanks for the tip! :)

Just coming back to this to ask if this is in the works or not. If not, then I'm asking to bring it back to the developer's attention. Thanks.

    Hi @kazooless,

Thanks for following up to ask about this! I'm afraid I don't have any news on this feature request - additional controls for the password recipe haven't been added in the latest beta versions of 1Password, and beyond that we don't discuss future plans in advance. That's not to say we'll never add more controls, but I just don't know for sure when or if that will happen.

I think most of the password guidelines from the screenshot in your original message are already possible in the password generator - the only one that isn't is the restriction on which symbols are allowed. I know other sites have other requirements, though. Please keep in mind that you can manually edit a generated password before clicking the Fill button, so you can easily remove/replace symbols that aren't allowed (for example). Of course, as you said in your original message, the ideal solution would be if websites would allow more complex/random passwords instead of having restrictions! ;)

I'll be more than happy to let our dev team know that you asked about this again. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you about all that! But we definitely appreciate that you took the time to let us know that you're still interested in more password generator controls - changes that we make to 1Password are often based on feedback we get from our customers! So hopefully we'll be able to do something about that in a future version.

I would love to see this capability. I think having a field in the Password Generator sheet in which one could optionally enter a string of allowed symbols for each given site (and obviously the default state would be no restrictions) would be very useful, since different sites allow different sets of symbols. An awful lot of sites have this kind of limitation, and it would be good to be able to address it as part of the generation process, rather than having to edit the password by hand or remove symbols entirely.

  • Hey @NomadUK! We appreciate the feedback. Being able to simply generate a password that works for all your sites, rather than requiring a bit of editing after, is a valid concern. I've let our developers know your exact thoughts on this, including the accepted symbols concept, which is great. :)
