Upgrade Problem
I have a license for an older version of 1 password for mac. Trued to upgrade on the site but it sent me to the apple store, since I sync using iCloud. Cost at the apple store was $49.99 and it did not give me the discounted price for the upgrade. How do I get my refund for the difference?

Hi @peterfowler,
Sadly Apple's Mac App Store (MAS) has no way to offer a discount for existing customers or indeed any way to offer a selective discount at all. This will require Apple augmenting the App Store as it is completely under their control. We can offer a discount in our store because it is under our control. With the release of iOS 8 and Yosemite and Apple now enforcing restricted access to iCloud related frameworks it means you as a customer have a decision to make I'm afraid. If you value iCloud sync highly enough over the likes of Dropbox then you're (sadly) forced to purchase through MAS. If Dropbox or Wi-Fi Sync are good enough for you then you can take advantage of our ability to offer a discount to our previous customers.
I'm sorry it isn't better news.

I'm in the same boat. Why wouldn't you provide a refund, or something for customers that want to upgrade and have the iCloud sync option? I was really wanting to start using your services, but having to pay full price when I already had a previous version doesn't make any sense. The worst part is that I had to spend all this time searching for information about this. Instead of directing customers to where they see the full price you should let them know in advance about the issue. I have heard so many good things about your products, but this does not make any sense.

Hi @freeseframe,
I'm sorry for any confusion about this! Just to be clear: If you have a license for 1Password 3 for Mac and want to upgrade to 1Password 5 for Mac, you don't have to pay full price if you upgrade your license through the AgileBits Store, where we have the ability to give you an upgrade discount.
But we can't do the same for the Mac App Store version, because Apple provides no way for us (or any developer) to offer discounts or upgrade pricing on their App Stores. This is true on both Mac and iOS, and it applies to all apps. It would be great if there was a way around this, but at this time there is not. Maybe Apple will change this in the future, but it's completely up to Apple, as they control the way their App Store works. So currently, if you wanted the Mac App Store version of 1Password, you would need to purchase that separately at the price shown there. (We occasionally have sales, but we don't announce them ahead of time.)
Keep in mind that you don't need to buy the Mac App Store version unless you absolutely have to have the iCloud sync option. Although it's a popular feature, it's not the only way to sync your 1Password data. The AgileBits Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac has Dropbox sync, Wi-Fi sync, and Folder sync.
The option most similar to iCloud sync is Dropbox sync, which is a great sync option and is how I've always synced my 1Password data (many of my AgileBits colleagues do as well). 1Password is secure by design and your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted, so with regard to security there's no difference between syncing 1Password data with Dropbox or iCloud. 1Password simply doesn't depend on the security of either to protect your data.
Dropbox also has the advantage that it can be used to share vaults with friends, family, and co-workers, whereas it's not currently possible to share anything between iCloud accounts. Plus, Dropbox is the only single sync solution that works across all 1Password platforms: Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.
If you decide to upgrade to the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac, you can visit our Upgrade Store and enter your license code to see your upgrade discount and license options.
I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you about that! If you have more questions, please let us know.
