Licensing Question

I'm running Mavericks and can't upgrade my machine yet (recording studio, hardware compatibility issues with Yosemite). Can I buy a license, use it for 4.x and download 5.x installer from AgileBits and install 5.x without having to re-purchase license when I'm ready to upgrade to Yosemite? Or will I need to buy a new license?

The upgrade from version 4 to version 5 is free. In fact, to get your license for version 4, you'll buy one for version 5. The license file you will use to register your copy is the same for both, so you'll be ready when you're able to update your OS too.

This all assumes you will buy directly from AgileBits on their web store. If you want to by from Apple at the Mac App Store, getting version 4 there is tricky. If you do want to go that route, post pack and so,done will give you directions. They will include finding someone else with Yosemite installed.

Finally, with version 5 you will only be able to sync your data among devices via iCloud if you buy from Apple. Since the release of Yosemite and 1Password 5, only the Apple version can do that.

Thanks hawkmoth - Once I upgrade to Yosemite, is there a way to transition a copy purchased from AWS to the MAS version for iCloud sync if I want to go that way?

Apple provides no way for developers to transition licenses from the ones they've sold to the MAS. So, if you think iCloud is important enough to you, your only option then will be to purchase another license from Apple. The other sync methods are robust and reliable, and the main security is the master password for your own data, so I don't think from a security standpoint there is any good reason to favor one cloud solution over another. But others disagree and have very strong opinions about which to use. I'm quite content using Dropbox. There are also frequent requests to AgileBits to add additional cloud options, which they say that they are exploring.

There are several things about Apple's policies with their app stores that work to the disadvantage of developers. Not providing a way to transfer licenses is one, But they also don't allow free trials or special upgrade pricing for previous licensees, The latter two are more serious, IMO.

    Hi @manosar,

I hope hawkmoth's answers have been helpful! As he mentioned, unfortunately Apple doesn't provide a way to convert a license for our website version of 1Password to the Mac App Store version. If you purchase the web store version now, and later decide you want the Mac App Store version, it would require a separate purchase.

However, I also agree that Dropbox sync is a great sync option, and is compatible not just with the Mac and iOS versions of 1Password, but also the Windows and Android versions. If you need any help to set up Dropbox sync, you can find steps here.

If you have more questions or need anything else, please let us know - we're always glad to help! :)
