How do I change my secondary vault password? [not directly possible at the moment]

I'm not sure how to change a secondary vault master password. I open the secondary vault and go into Preferences, Security and click "Change Master Password" and I get an error saying I cannot change the Master Password when a secondary vault is open. I searched in the Support section and couldn't find anything on this....

  • I’m using 1Password version #: 5.1
  • On a (Mac/PC/iOS/Android): Mac and iOS
  • Syncing with other devices (list them): iPhone, iPad, iMac, Mac Mini

    You cannot currently change the password for a secondary vault. The work around is to create a new secondary vault with the password you want and then move your items from the existing secondary vault to the new secondary vault before deleting the original secondary vault.

    Hi @shookie monster,

    I do apologise for the convoluted approach to changing the Master Password on a secondary vault. We know it's something our users want to see and it is in our list of feature requests. For the moment though Stephen_C is correct, the easiest way forward is to create a new secondary vault and then copy all of the items across. If you would like some detailed instructions please do ask and we'll get that written up for you :smile:

    Hi @shookie monster ,

    First off - love the user name! Gave me a bit of a grin. :)

    I'll be happy to let our team know you're keen on some more editing options for secondary vaults. If there's anything else about 1Password that you think needs a bit of polish, you know where to find us!

    I've never used the secondary vaults but have kids with passwords and didn't want them mixed with mine. Didn't even know I could have multiple vaults until I dug around and then found out I could. So I set them up with basic passwords and planned to change them to something more difficult. Could figure out how to do it though.

    If you plan on adding this functionality, it would be nice to have a category or something just for secondary vault master passwords. That way they aren't mixed in with every other login. Hope that makes sense.

    I know it makes sense, shookie monster, even if I temporarily misunderstand you. :)

    To be sure I do (or don't), you'd like a separate location for storing the passwords used to unlock your secondary vaults?

    Yeah, I mean a separate category. For instance, you have Logins, Secure Notes, Credit Cards, Identities, etc...... Maybe a separate category for "Vault Passwords" or something. Wouldn't be for everyone, but if someone has say 10 secondary vaults for some reason, it just lets the user have an easier location for them instead of lumping them in with another category. Not a huge deal.... all about organization and how some people might want them. Me personally, I would prefer more categories with less stuff in each category.... hope that makes sense.

  • Makes sense to me! I like the idea, and I'd be happy to pass the feedback to our development team for you. :)

    I really can't believe that changing vault passwords still isn't supported. There are requests going back 18+ months. Not having this functionality at this point in time/development is really disappointing.

    1Password is a password-storage app. It tells us when passwords are weak. It advises us to change passwords when sites announce hacks. ... but you can't change the password on a secondary vault if you need to for any reason. (Perhaps your vault password gets leaked, or you find a keylogger on your system, or you have to give it to someone in an emergency, or ... )

    Hi @signe,

    I'm very sorry we still don't have a better way to change the master password for a secondary vault! I've also been hoping for that feature to be added. My understanding is that it's not as simple to implement as it seems, and there are lots of things that need to be taken into consideration. Our developers haven't forgotten about this, and I'll be more than happy to forward your comments to them. I don't have any information about when to expect this feature to be added, though.

    In the meantime, as you may already know (and as others have mentioned earlier in this discussion), the workaround would be to create a new secondary vault, and move/copy all your items from the old secondary vault to the new one. If you need more specific steps for that, just let us know and we'll be happy to go into further detail.

    I wish I had a better answer for you about that! If you have questions about anything else, please do let us know. Thanks!

    @Drew_AG,

    I understand the workaround, and I understand development complications, but I don't understand this not being a higher priority than it apparently has been. The workaround is the equivalent of telling someone "If you want to change your password, just create a new account and then move all of your content over to that one."

    On Mac, the process for setting up and moving data is fairly easy, because it opens all of the vaults at once, but if you work primarily on Windows or iOS, it ranges from "difficult" to "impossible." Windows doesn't open all the vaults, so it can't "move" items the way that Mac can - you have to export the whole thing and then reimport it. iOS has no way to do any of these actions, so it's simply not something that can be accomplished.

    None of these are actions that any more novice user should be expected to have to go through - it's a problem with both usability and security.

    Hi @signe,

    Actually, if you're also using 1Password for Windows, you don't need to use the workaround I suggested at all (so no need to move items from one vault to another). In the Windows version, there's no concept of Primary or secondary vaults, so all vaults are treated exactly the same. Therefore you can change the master password for any vault on Windows (first, you should backup that 1Password vault on Windows by opening the main 1Password program and going to the menu for Backup > Back Up 1Password Vault).

    To change the master password for a vault on Windows:

    • Open the main 1Password program, and open/unlock the vault you want to change.
    • Go to Preferences.
    • Select the Security tab and click the Change Master Password button.
    • Enter a new master password in both fields, then click OK.
    • Make sure you can unlock your vault with the new master password.

    If you're syncing that vault to 1Password for Mac as a secondary vault (via Dropbox), the change should also sync to your Mac, as well as to iOS.

    Does that help? If I misunderstood what you meant, please let us know.

    I discovered a simpler workaround than I've seen documented so far, for changing the password of a secondary vault on a Mac. Maybe it's because you added a new merging feature, but anyway, I thought I'd mention it in case it isn't common knowledge:

    1. 1Password 5 -> Switch to Vault -> (vaultname)
    2. 1Password 5 -> Delete (vaultname) Vault
    3. 1Password 5 -> New Vault
    4. Name it the same thing (vaultname) and type in your new password
    5. 1Password 5 -> Preferences -> Sync
    6. Choose the same sync file as before
    7. Say "yes" to the merge

    Voila!

    Hi @johnnyray14,

    Thanks for taking the time to post those steps here! That's certainly a bit easier and will give you a different master password for the secondary vault on that Mac, but there are a couple things to keep in mind:

    First, before following those steps, you'll need to have Dropbox or Folder sync enabled. Otherwise, you'll lose your data from the vault when you delete it from 1Password. (It sounds like you already have sync set up for your secondary vault(s), but I wanted to mention this for anyone else who might find this thread and try your steps).

    Second, although those steps will give you a new master password for the local copy of the secondary vault on that Mac, the problem is that the data file in Dropbox might still have the old master password. However, it's been a while since I've tested that so I'd need to try it again to be sure of the behavior.

    This will soon be a moot point though, because our developers have added the ability to change a secondary vault's master password to a recent beta of 1Password 5, so barring any unforeseen circumstances, that should be included in the next update (although I don't have a timeframe for when that will be available).

    Thank you again for sharing your workaround, we appreciate it! :)

    Thank you for the response, Drew. I should have actually tested it first---I forgot that you don't actually need to enter the secondary password unless you go to an account that uses it as a primary vault. And you're right, it kept the old password! Apparently the merge replaces the empty vault's new password with the password from the non-empty vault that you merge into it. I'll go ahead and edit my post so that it doesn't lead someone astray. I'm happy to hear that you've added the feature to a beta!!

    Oops, there I went making assumptions again---I don't seem to be able to edit my previous post. Is there an admin who can revise or delete it accordingly?

    Hi @johnnyray14,

    I think we've got a pretty good record here of what happened, no need to edit! Thanks so much for playing around and testing things out. I think it will be pretty great to finally be able to get this feature out of beta testing. ;)
