Can iPassword save and enter Mac administrator password?

Can iPassword be used on the Mac computer to save and enter an administrator password for the many times that can be required while I'm logged in and working on the Mac? Or is the app only for website passwords?

You can save the admin password and retrieve it but filling it in is a manual process (i.e., you have to copy and paste from 1P: 1P can't fill it automatically for you). Semi-automated filling will work only through a browser.

    Hi @lazybones,

I hope that Stephen has helped to answer your question. At this time, he's right - 1Password can only automatically fill in your details in the web browser. 1Password makes it easy to click and copy passwords, or, if you find you need to enter a password frequently, you might consider using Diceware to create these passwords. The concept of Diceware is that a few randomly selected words can provide you a secure password that also easy to remember and type. You can read more about Diceware in our article: Towards Better Master Passwords.

Of course, if you have further questions, we're happy to help!

Thanks for your responses. The bad news is that the Mac doesn't allow copy/paste into any log in or authentication window. (yes, those are real tears falling from my eyes) All those looonng passwords must be manually entered, character by character. Every.Blesset.Time. I had already read the linked article -- it's a good one! -- and had been using diceware, beefed up with personal touches. However, the bad guys have ever-faster computer programs which can crack unvarnished diceware phrases faster than I can roll enough dice to create all the passwords I need even for my Mac files. :-) Today I stumbled upon my own more personal method which I believe creates stronger, more memorable passwords and yet reveal no personal connection to me. It was a happily spontaneous event, this discovery. We'll see whether its promise holds up as I use it to create further passwords. I am currently trying out 1Password because even if it can't enter my Mac passwords for me, it's a more secure and readily accessible place to store them all. I have memorized several loooonng passwords I use often (such as Mac login) and which I don't want lying around on a piece of paper. Beyond those, I simply have to have all this stuff recorded somewhere.

    Hi @lazybones,

Thanks for getting back to us about that! I hadn't realized it before (or more likely forgot), but you're right - it looks like copy/paste won't work in the Mac OS X authentication windows, so you'll need to manually type your password there.

I'm glad you found a method of choosing a master password that works for you! I hope you enjoy using 1Password, and if you have more questions or need anything else, please don't hesitate to let us know. :)
