trying to use 1P for nytimes.com

Hi @hodgey,
When you say "it just doesn't work", what do you mean, exactly? On www.nytimes.com, it looks like you need to click the "Log In" button first to see the login form, and then the ⌘\ keyboard shortcut (or selecting the Login from the 1Password extension) should be able to fill the email address and password fields. What happens when you try that? I created a test login for that site and it seems to fill those fields correctly, but I don't have an actual account there so I can't fully test it.
Are you able to copy & paste your login credentials from 1Password into that site and successfully log in? If it works when you copy & paste your email address & password but not when you have the extension fill them for you, please try manually saving a new Login for that site. Does the new Login item work correctly?
If you still have trouble with that, it looks like there's an alternate login page which might help: https://myaccount.nytimes.com/auth/login
Try manually saving a new Login item from that alternate login site. Does that work any better? Let us know how it goes, thanks!

Hi thanks for coming back to me and sorry for the delay in responding
When i say it doesnt work, i mean i click 'log in' and then click the 1p extension in the browser - the login screen then disappears and i am back in the home page without being logged in
If i copy and paste the credentials then it works. I have deleted the old log in and then Manually saved a new one - still no luck
It does work however if i log in via the alternative site you gave me - thanks
I have also tried it using my chrome browser and the same thing occurs
Cheers

Hi @hodgey,
Thanks for getting back to us! If I understand your workflow correctly, you're clicking on the extension to find your NYTimes Login. It could be that click that's causing the pop-up login pane to disappear.
What happens if you click on the "Log in" form (as Drew suggests) and then use the ⌘\ ( Command- \ ) shortcut to fill your details?
In any case, I'm glad to hear that the alternate log in page works for you. This is a good solution to sites that have those pop-ups.

Hi @Klaatu67,
It sounds like you're having the same issue described in this discussion, so I merged it here. Please take a look at my earlier post and try the suggestions there. Does that help at all?
Or if I misunderstood and you're having a different problem than the one from the OP, please let us know. Thanks!

Thanks Drew the alternate signon page worked, I should have researched the site before reporting the problem. Thanks

HI Megan
I tried the ⌘\ ( Command- \ ) shortcut but same thing happens as when i click the extension- i have made a short video of what happens - here is the link https://maventusgroup.box.com/s/ozdapse51l7xtdrqaa34fv067dzcghj0 ( you system won't let me attach the file), hopefully that might help you -

Hi @hodgey,
I did a bit more digging, and it turns out this is a known issue that our developers are aware of. The issue is that the popup login window on nytimes.com is dismissed automatically whenever there is any activity in the main page. The 1Password extension does some things when filling which accidentally forces that popup window into closing.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience! I'll let our developers know you're also experiencing this problem, and hopefully we'll be able to fix this in a future update. For now, you'll need to either copy/paste your login credentials into the popup window, or use the alternate login site: https://myaccount.nytimes.com/auth/login
If you need anything else or have more questions about that, please let us know - we're here for you! :)

OK thanks.
I have another issue that i want to mention since i am here!
I am a Qantas Frequent Flyer Member https://www.qantas.com.au. To log on to the Qantas FF site i need to provide them with my frequent flyer #, Surname and pin number but i can only get 1P to save 2 of these things - is there any work around?0 -
The usual solution to your "Quantas" problem is to re-create and save the login manually. Have you tried that?

Hi @hodgey,
Please do let us know how you get along with Stephen_C's suggestion. When you manually save a Login item from the extension it records everything it can find and stores it in the web form details. This normally allows you to create a Login for any page, even if the page doesn't hold to a more traditional username and password form. In fact I have one Login item that fills in 5 text boxes, none of which are a password.
Let us know how you get along.

Thanks all that worked! Manually saving it did the trick - i will remember that in future

It's one of the things I learned when I first started visiting these forums @hodgey and it's by far the best piece of information I've picked up here. If in doubt see if a manual save works  It doesn't cure everything but if a manual save doesn't work then you know that site is a tricky wee swine and definitely requires assistance

I am convinced that 1Password and the New York Times are mutually exclusive. What is Agile failing to do or is the New York Times unique in its sign in process. Do I have the option of selectively turining on Apples Autofill since that appears to work?
1Password Version: 5.3
Extension Version: 4.4.0
OS Version: OS X 10.10.4

Hi @Klaatu67,
I hope you don't mind, but I've merged your new message with this existing discussion about the same issue (which I noticed you contacted us about a few months ago)
In the last message you posted here, you said you were able to save a working Login item using the alternate login page I had suggested: https://myaccount.nytimes.com/auth/login
Are you having any trouble using that Login item with the alternate login site?
As for the issue with the main nytimes.com site, the login form there is in a type of popup window that gets improperly dismissed by the 1Password extension when it tries to fill your credentials there. In other words, the method 1Password uses to fill those fields also happens to be the same thing that makes that popup window close. As an example, you'll notice that when the popup window is open, clicking anywhere else on the page outside of that window will cause it to close. Now, of course 1Password isn't actually "clicking" anything, but it's doing something that causes the same thing to happen.
I've noticed similar login forms on a few other sites, so I wouldn't say this is entirely unique to nytimes.com, but in my own experience it doesn't seem completely common, either. Login forms work a bit differently on just about every website that has them, and some forms are a lot trickier to fill than others. We try our best to work correctly with as many sites as we can, but there are millions of web pages programmed by hundreds of thousands of developers using scores of technologies that adhere only loosely to dozens of "standards", so it's tough to accommodate all of them. Therefore we cannot guarantee compatibility with every website, but hopefully in the future we'll be able to make 1Password work better with this particular site.
Do I have the option of selectively turining on Apples Autofill since that appears to work?
You can certainly do that if you'd like. But remember that instead of turning that on to work with just one specific site, you can use the alternate login site that I previously mentioned.
I hope that helps to clear things up a bit, but if you have more questions, just let us know! :)

Thanks Drew, the appears to be a user error, me. What I have done is to change the New York Time bookmark to the alternate logon site. I got lazy and occasionally I would see an article via Google New search and then after following the link then go to the top of the NYT main page and encounter the problem. Agile should send an E-Mail to NYT and tell them that they are not playing by the rules>
Thanks0 -
So what is the trick to getting NYT working with 1Password on the Mac? I'm getting that same thing where the Popup window for login disappears.

Hi @tiantai,
Currently, there's no trick to get 1Password working with the "Log In" popup window on the main http://www.nytimes.com/ website. It just won't work right now because that popup window is dismissed when the 1Password extension is used. Our developers are aware of this, and are looking into whether or not we can do something on our end to make that site and 1Password play nicely together.
In the meantime, you can either copy & paste your login credentials from 1Password into that login popup window, or you can use this alternate login site: https://myaccount.nytimes.com/auth/login
If you need to save a new Login item for that alternate site, you can do so by following these steps.
I hope that helps! If you have more questions about that, please let us know. :)
