Intermittent Auto-Submit Problem (Posted on 4/19/2015)
1Password 4.4.2 and Safari Extension 4.3.1
Recently some websites are not working when auto-submit is enabled. If I allow the Safari extension to fill-out my username and password and I manually click "submit" I am able to log-on. It's as if the extension clicks the "submit" button too quickly for the website...
So far this happens with only a few websites that I have visited. But with 513 long-ins stored in my 1Password database there are probably others that will have this problem.

Hi @MrMojoOne,
I'm sorry you're having trouble with auto-submit! Can you please elaborate a bit about the problem you described:
It's as if the extension clicks the "submit" button too quickly for the website...
What exactly happens when auto-submit is enabled? Are you saying auto-submit is causing a problem with filling the username and password fields? Or does 1Password fill those fields, but doesn't submit them? You said the problem happens when auto-submit is enabled, but there are actually a couple different ways to enable or disable it - what steps are you taking to enable/disable auto-submit? Any details you can give us about what you've noticed on your end will be helpful.
Also, can you let us know a few other details:
- What exact version of Mac OS X are you running?
- Are you using the AgileBits Store version or the Mac App Store version of 1Password 4?
- What version of Safari are you using?
- What version of the 1Password extension is installed in Safari?
- Have you tried this in other browsers, or just Safari?
Thanks!

When I use Auto-Submit I sometimes get a message that either my username or password is incorrect even though they are correct. My impression is that auto-submit works too quickly for some websites... If I allow 1Password to fill-in the fields and I click submit then logging-in works as expected. (I just had this happen to me when signing-in to a health care provider's website...)
I enable/disable Auto-Submit in the website's data window in 1Password.
OS 10.9.5
Mac App Store version
Safari 7.1.7
1Password Safari Extension 4.3.1
Safari is my primary web browser; I only use Firefox when there is a compatibility issue which is a rare occurrence...0 -
@MrMojoOne: I too encounter issues like that from time to time. The best thing to do is report it using our Synapse website issue tracker so we can take a look and improve 1Password going forward. And in the mean time, simply disabling autosubmit, either on a case-by-case basis or altogether, to mitigate the issue in the mean time.
I'll also say that I notice this happening much more frequently when I either have a lot of websites open in Safari at once, it's been open for a long time, or both. What's happening is that Safari is struggling under a heavy memory load, so pages load more slowly, and then 1Password is submitting 'too early' when it would otherwise be 'right on time' after opening Safari completely fresh. Safari hasn't received substantial (and much-needed) improvements to its extension frameworks for quite some time, so I'm hoping that Apple makes some progress in this area soon. Cheers! :)

@brenty: Thanks for your observation about the possible causes of my auto-submit glitch. I have Safari startup when my Mini boots up via an Energy Saver schedule and it remains on until I shut down my Mac at the end of the day. I start with 9 tabs open but I'm through reading those websites in around ten minutes. I use Safari a lot during the day but I usually don't have a lot of websites open at one time unless I am doing online research during a writing project.
A few websites seem to always have a problem with auto-submit so I have been disabling it for those websites. I'd hate to totally disable auto-submit because it is convenient to use... I'll start using the Synapse website issue tracker to report problems in the future.
Since there is no "fix" for this minor problem I consider the issue to be resolved. Thanks for the replies to my post!

Hopefully it's rare but there are some sites where our auto-submit feature won't play nicely @MrMojoOne. Normally it's either a bizarre timing issue or how the page reacts to the press of the enter key as that's all our auto-submit feature is - we mimic the enter key being pressed while focus is on the last field we filled. We're always trying to improve our support for various sites but some may elude us for technical reasons that would require a total redesign. Thankfully if it is just a very small handful of sites the submit feature can be turned off for individual Login items as brenty linked you to and as I think you're already aware too.
