Slowness & Crashing

Having some weird issues lately with the most up to date version.

A few things -

1) When I run [command] + \ and the box comes up for chrome, I start typing the password and half way through it resets and removes everything I typed and starts over again. Also sometimes the box will move around for some reason.

2) When running [command] + \ it takes sometimes 3-5 seconds to load the sites to login to. You feel the application dragging when it's trying to figure out what logins are available for that domain.

Everything was fine in the last version, this version there seems to be a lot of issues.

1Password 5
Version 5.3.1 (531001)

Chrome
Version 43.0.2357.45 beta (64-bit)

    Hi @idealerror,

I'm sorry you're having some trouble with the 1Password extension in Chrome!

    1) When I run [command] + \ and the box comes up for chrome, I start typing the password and half way through it resets and removes everything I typed and starts over again.

This sounds very similar to the problem I described earlier today in this post. Does that seem to explain the issue you're noticing?

Also sometimes the box will move around for some reason.

This is a known issue that our developers are looking into. I'm sorry for the inconvenience! I'll add your comment to the bug report.

    2) When running [command] + \ it takes sometimes 3-5 seconds to load the sites to login to. You feel the application dragging when it's trying to figure out what logins are available for that domain.

Can you elaborate with some more specific details about that? When you open the extension, are you typing in the Search field to look for a matching Login item? Do you have multiple Login items for the same domain? Is it taking 3-5 seconds to show results once you start typing in the Search field, or does it take 3-5 seconds for the extension to open after you use the ⌘\ keyboard shortcut? The more details you can give us about what happens, the better. Thanks!

Everything was fine in the last version, this version there seems to be a lot of issues.

Are you referring to the latest version of 1Password, the 1Password extension, or Chrome? If you mean the latest version of the 1Password app, were you previously using 1Password 4 and upgraded to 5, or do you just mean (for example) the update from version 5.3 to 5.3.1?

I noticed you're currently using a beta version of Chrome. Have you tried to reproduce the issues in the latest stable version of Chrome (currently 42.0.2311.135)? Or have you tried in Safari or Firefox? If so, please let us know if there's a difference, it will help to narrow down the source of the issue.

Also, what version of the 1Password extension is installed in Chrome?

    Thanks in advance!

So much info! Thanks for the detailed response. Let me break down your questions -

    • Related to the other post, no this is different.

    • Here's a quick clip what happens http://cl.ly/2R2D3f2d2i0o . Basically when it first opens and you start typing, then the box moves and cuts off what you previously had typed and you have to retype.

    • Here's a quick clip related to my second problem http://cl.ly/1m2g2S031Z1D .. Where basically when you run [command] + \ it takes a second to load the entries for the specific site and sometimes it doesn't load them at all.

    • I've been using 1Password 5 for a while now I believe. There was an update a week or so ago I believe and problems started happening after that.

    • I don't have the older stable version of Chrome installed, although like I mentioned, I didn't start having problems until the latest update that came out.

    • Running 1Password Chrome Extension 4.3.1.90 currently.

    Hi @idealerror,

Thank you so much for the videos! That really helps us understand what you're seeing on your end, and we appreciate it! :)

I see what you mean about the 1Password mini window: You start to type your master password, but then the window suddenly moves and deletes the characters you already typed. That's related to the known issue I mentioned, where the mini window moves around on its own. I'll add your information about that to the bug report. I'm sorry again for the inconvenience!

Now, for the problem with taking several seconds for matching Login items to appear, that's definitely odd. Does that seem to happen with the same sites, or does it randomly happen with any site that has matching Logins? I'm not aware of any issues in the 5.3.1 update that would cause something like this, so I think we should be able to get it working properly again. One thing you can try is to install the latest beta version of the 1Password extension in Chrome:

After installing the beta extension, please restart Chrome. Does that make any difference?

    Hey @Drew_AG

I've gone ahead and installed the beta, and disabled the other extension. I'm still seeing the same issue. Essentially when attempting to login and takes between a half a second and a full second to load the logins or like I said, doesn't load them at all.

Here's a new updated video using the latest extension - http://cl.ly/3L1T2O1x3D2m

    Hi @idealerror,

I think the key part is confirming whether this last aspect of the unwanted behaviour is also connected to Chrome as I suspect it may be.

I assume the behaviour is sadly, reliably consistent in Chrome. If you were to try Safari and/or Firefox do you see the same issue at all or is it limited to Chrome? I'm not suggesting for a moment that you change browsers because of this, just that it might help narrow down the source of the issue. I realise asking seems like a pain but we only do when we can't replicate the problem the person is experiencing. I have a machine specifically for this sort of let's-go-break-it stuff but that's only of use if I can reproduce your situation and this is one of those odd ones where not everybody is impacted and we don't yet understand why.

If we know it's Chrome it may even be tied in with the other issues too as one of our developers believes the odd behaviour with the your first issue is performance related.

Now supposedly some people have experienced a lessening of the issue with the stable version of Chrome. It depends on what the beta brings to the table I suppose. Yes, we still need to work on this as at some point the beta will become the stable but if it did improve matters at least you have a short-term solution while we work in it.

In Safari it works perfectly fine, this is definitely a Chrome issue.

I tried installing various versions of Chrome, same issue.

I think it's definitely the Chrome Extension.

    Thank you @idealerror,

I've created a new report for this second issue and given the possibility that they're linked I'm connecting it with the other report.

So the bad news is given the stable version didn't help I don't think there is a lot we can do at the moment. I'm sorry it isn't better news :(

I really don't expect this to make a difference but we can try. The last significant change in the 1Password Chrome Extension was in version 4.3. Before that was version 4.2.5 which we released back in October of last year. This is a link to the Chrome version of that extension. One problem you will likely face is making sure Chrome doesn't try and update the extension. In Safari (my browser of choice) that means turning off automatic updates for all extensions. If it works that might help narrow down the cause and I suppose you could revert to using the old extension although it's not a great workaround for one key reason, the new filling logic in 5.3 needs the 4.3 extension or greater.

I do apologise we don't have a more satisfying conclusion to your enquiry at this point in time.

This extension unfortunately has the same issue as the others.

I hate Safari with a passion, so I can't justify switching browsers..

Update - I installed Google Chrome Canary and the problem went away in Canary, still exists on Chrome.

I can use Canary, shouldn't be a problem.

    Hi @idealerror,

Thank you for following up to let us know it's working well for you in Canary! I will let our developers know about that. Hopefully we're able to solve the other issues happening with the extension in Chrome, but in the meantime I'm glad Canary is a suitable alternative for you.

If you need anything else, please let us know! :)

    Hey Drew,

Bad news, it started happening again a few hours after using Canary. What you'll see in this video clip is the logins load at the exact same time that the box moves around. Could these two things be related? When are you guys going to fix the flying box bug?

    Hi @idealerror,

That's too bad, I was really hoping it would all continue to work well for you with Canary. I know this was suggested before, but have you tried using the latest stable release of Chrome (currently version 43.0.2357.81)? You previously said you tried "various versions of Chrome" but I'm not sure if a stable release was one of them. If you haven't already tried that, I definitely recommend it, as it has solved the problem for other customers.

Could these two things be related?

Yes, our developers were able to determine both of these things are actually part of the same problem. So the good news is that (in theory) solving one should also solve the other.

When are you guys going to fix the flying box bug?

I don't have a timeframe for that, but this is definitely one of the top issues we've been hearing about recently, so I know our developers would really like to squash this one as soon as they can. My understanding is that the issue is trickier to solve than it seems, but hopefully it won't be too long before a solution is found. I'm sorry for the inconvenience!
