Paid version suddenly converted to Trial version on Mac

I purchased 1 PW on March 23, 2014 from the iTunes store and then downloaded it on my iPad/iPhone and Mac so that it would sync across devices. I have been using it for about nine months and all of a sudden my Mac says that my version is a trial version and will not let me change any existing information or add new information. 1PW works just find on my iPhone and iPad. When I click on "trial version" on my Mac it tries to make me repurchase the app on my Mac. Help!

Thanks for the information. I had already seen that link, but when I go to the Mac App Store to "get" the app, it asks me to buy it again for $49.99. I already bought it once.

    Hi @teamhughes5,

Have you tried looking in the Purchases tab? If you've purchased 1Password for Mac (MAS) then it should be listed in your Purchases tab and if you don't have it installed there should be a button titled either DOWNLOAD or INSTALL. I think it will say DOWNLOAD given all 1Password needs is to be copied into the ~/Applications/` folder which the App Store will take care of.

Now if you don't see 1Password for Mac in the Purchases tab is it possible you've purchased 1Password for iOS via iTunes? Our purchases are per platform and currently there is no way to build the Mac and iOS versions together as Apple's stores don't support this.

Please do keep us informed

Thank you, littlebobbytables. Your information has been helpful. I looked at my MAC app store purchases, and don't show a purchase at my MAC app store. I show it as a purchase on my iPhone App store and on my iPad App store. So that I understand correctly, are you saying I have to buy your application in two different places, one for my mobile devices and one for my apple desktop? If that is the case, it seems ridiculous to buy multiple versions of the same software.

    Yes, you are correct.

I agree that it may seem ridiculous, but that's the way Apple set it up. AgileBits can do nothing about it unless Apple decide to make different arrangements.

At present the ONLY was to buy apps for iOS is via the iOS App Store (either using iTunes on a Mac, or the App Store app on an iOS device). And the ONLY way to buy a Mac app via Apple is from the Mac App store, though you can also buy 1PW for Mac direct from AgileBits. Bundling iOS and Mac versions together is just not possible. I expect many developers would be pleased if Apple changed this, but they are stuck at present.

    Hi @teamhughes5,

danco is correct, there isn't a way to bundle an iOS app with a Mac app, even if we ignore where the Mac application came from.

Part of this is that the iOS app isn't merely a client to the Mac application - it's intended as a fully functional, standalone app. We sell 1Password per platform so you only have to purchase for the platforms you're interested in rather than covering the cost of development and support for all the platforms. I suppose we could change it but the mobile platforms still represent a problem given that isn't how their stores work. If we tied the mobile clients to the desktop software that would eliminate everybody that doesn't want to own a desktop machine - we do have users in that situation.

I don't think there exists a setup that would make everybody happy at the moment - sorry about that.

The summer got away from me, so now I am working on syncing all my devices again. I understand what you are saying about Mac and IOS having different purchasing methods and platforms. However, somehow I bought 1PW at the App store, loaded it on my phone and iPad, but also somehow loaded it on my Mac. And they all synced perfectly for some time! So if I now have to purchase and download 1pw on my Mac, will that just update what is currently on my Mac, or do I need to delete the program from my Mac and start all over? And do the IOS and Mac versions talk to each other? Or do I simply have to pick EITHER Mac or IOS for 1PW? I love having the copy and paste feature on my mobile devices when on the go, but also love having the copy/paste feature on my 3 Mac computers when my husband and I are working at home. And I assume this is a one time only purchase price, correct? I don't want to have to pay $50 every year for this (x2 if I use both the IOS and Mac platforms).

    Hi @teamhughes5,

I'm sorry for all the confusion about this! I can definitely help clear things up here.

First, this knowledgebase article might help to answer some of your questions: What licenses do I need to use 1Password on all my devices?

Now, getting back to your specific situation: From your description, you purchased 1Password 4 for iOS from iTunes (or the iOS App Store) back on March 23, 2014. As the others here mentioned, that purchase was only for the iOS version (but can be used on all your iOS devices that are associated with your same Apple ID).

As for the Mac version of 1Password, that's actually available from either our own AgileBits Store, or the Mac App Store. The AgileBits Store version can be downloaded for free from our website and used in trial mode (when the trial period ends, there are a few restrictions). The Mac App Store version doesn't have a trial mode, because you would need to purchase it there first before you can download it. Therefore, since you're getting the "Trial Expired" notice on your Mac, you must have downloaded the AgileBits Store version.

So now, if you want to continue using 1Password on your Mac(s), you'll need to purchase the Mac version from either the AgileBits Store or the Mac App Store. We have another knowledgebase article which explains the difference: Should I buy 1Password from the AgileBits Store or the Mac App Store?

In your situation, here's how the differences would affect you:

    • If you buy a license from the AgileBits Store, you'll be able to fully activate the 1Password app that you already have installed on your Mac. Activation is done with a license file, and you'll receive an email from us with a link that you can click to automatically apply that license file to 1Password. You'll be able to sync with your iOS devices using Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync. The AgileBits Store version doesn't have the iCloud sync option, but since you haven't been using iCloud sync for 1Password, that's probably not a big deal for you.

    • If you purchase 1Password from the Mac App Store, you'll install a separate copy of the 1Password app on your Mac (the Mac App Store version is called 1Password.app, and the AgileBits Store version is called 1Password 5.app). The first time you open the Mac App Store version, it will find the data you have in the AgileBits Store version. Once you set that up, you can delete the AgileBits Store version of the 1Password app (don't use any app cleaning utilities to do that). You'll be able to sync with your iOS devices using iCloud, Dropbox, or Wi-Fi sync.

I think that should answer your questions, but just to make sure:

So if I now have to purchase and download 1pw on my Mac, will that just update what is currently on my Mac, or do I need to delete the program from my Mac and start all over?

You won't need to start over, you'll still have all your data. As I mentioned above, you can either purchase a license from the AgileBits Store and apply that to the app that is already installed on your Mac, or you can buy the Mac App Store version which will find your existing data (and then you can delete the AgileBits Store version).

And do the IOS and Mac versions talk to each other?

If you're asking if your data will sync between the iOS and Mac versions of 1Password, then yes! You can find information on the sync options here: Sync options compared: Dropbox vs. iCloud vs. Wi-Fi

I assume this is a one time only purchase price, correct? I don't want to have to pay $50 every year for this (x2 if I use both the IOS and Mac platforms).

Yes, it's a one time purchase, there's no maintenance or subscription fees. When you purchase 1Password, your license for the purchased version will never expire. If we release a brand new version, it may or may not be a paid upgrade (for example, version 4 was a paid upgrade from version 3, but version 5 was a free upgrade from version 4). Even if it's a paid upgrade, you don't have to buy it if you don't want to - you can continue to use the one you bought as long as your operating system still supports it.

Hopefully that answers your questions, but please let us know if you need anything else. We're always happy to help! :)
