Hi: Could Agile please consider helping me out with some user friendliness improvements on the "pop-out / lookup window" for both 1Password FX extension (latest, Fx37.0.2) and 1Password mini (latest for mac 5.3)

  1. Open in the identical spot I move it to last. I get quickly frustrated removing and resizing this darn thing - Currently the pop-out opens center screen, right where I am typing, and that is not very user friendly in my book. Every time, I have to move it over to right.
  2. Preference setting at the Login level to flag, always open anchored. Some URL still not supporting autofill due to the login page design e.g. has 2 fields exactly the same name, so 1password has no idea which one you want. I have reported the URL via the support link. But there will be always tricky pages, so having ability to open up anchored and in position over to the right (where i last left it) -- saves on my trackpad gestures!
  3. Improve the access to anchor icon. I prefer LIttleSntiches anchor approach (which is icon on their network monitor). (please see screenshot) It is top right rather than bottom left and in the header, so you dont have to scroll/move down.
  4. Ability to delete login item by 1 tap in the pop-up window. I get tired of, open the pop-up, click edit, then 1Password opens, and takes a bit (so count for a few seconds).. arhh, there is the record. delete. must be a quicker simpler way. Currently too slow for me. I am naughty and do not delete.... and now the database is getting messy.

Thankyou for considering these 4 suggestions of improvement.

LittleSnitch's Anchor option of their Network Monitor:

    • anchor icon is top right
    • can resize easily
    • close is top left

    Hi @helppls,

I'll do my best to answer your queries in order.

    1. Can I ask, how do you open 1Password mini? There are three ways of doing so. You can click on the browser extension icon, you can click on the 1Password icon in the OS X menu bar and there is also the keyboard shortcut ⌥⌘\. Now I'm a big user of the keyboard shortcut and as my menu bar was filling up with other icons I decided to hide the 1Password icon from there. Now I haven't done systematic testing but for me 1Password mini always opens in the top right hand corner where I last set it. If I click on the the browser extension icon it always opens at the location of the icon and I can't comment too much on the menu bar icon. Do you tend to use the same approach for opening 1Password mini?
    2. If I've understood correctly then I think the ordering of the website fields is what you're looking for. If you edit a Login item then most fields have drag handles. You can reorder the website fields and 1Password will use the first one if you select a Login item from 1Password mini for open and fill. Would that fulfil your requirements?
    3. We can certainly consider altering the layout. What might be of interest though is the keyboard shortcut ⌘O for anchoring in 1Password mini. Could that be of use?
    4. You might find the main 1Password window more useful here. In the main window you can select multiple items using standard OS X selection techniques. To delete you can either use the backspace key which will request confirmation of sending the item(s) to 1Password's Trash or cmd + backspace to send directly to Trash without the confirmation dialog.

When addressing 2. I mentioned drag handles, this is what they look like just in case you weren't sure. Sadly the forums aren't great for handling images in a list. I've circled the drag handle for easy identification.

So depending on your particular workflow we may have found solutions for 2-4 and hopefully a bit more information regarding 1. will help us understand why this happening to you. Certainly it shouldn't and my particular setup doesn't do this. Like yourself I don't want the menu appearing centre screen hence my choice of the top right hand corner. Hopefully we can get this working for you

I tried to reply in order you asked.

    1. Can I ask, how do you open 1Password mini?
I click on the icon in my status menu (top right). I have Bartender app installed so you customize your OSX status menu. I only use the desktop if its not for logins. Which is hardly ever.... or I need to add PDF to a new piece of software then I will use the Desktop version to add the licence PDF and purchase receipt. But really 1Password mini, is 1Password to me.

    2. I dont use keyboard shortcuts as I have too many for my little brain. I am on a trackpad

    3. Now I haven't done systematic testing but for me 1Password mini always opens in the top right hand corner where I last set it.
My bad I did not explain correctly. Its the popup of the login item. That I am going to anchor. I have to use that alot as the web page is a naughty one and so does not play nice with 1password.

    4. Do you tend to use the same approach for opening 1Password mini?
Yes, FX and mini I open the same way. I use FX where I can and then go to mini when FX addon, does not give me the add new login icon.. not sure why. Or FX is being slow...... or 1password is having a wobble day and something has got out of gist (it typically corrects itself on reboot). So I have learnt just go to mini and get on with what I need to do and it all fixes itself by the next day. Not idealy but gets the job done.

    5. For my question 2, you say If I've understood correctly then I think the ordering of the website fields is what you're looking for.
Sorry No. I would like a preference setting at the Login level to flag, always open anchored. Nothing to do with order of website fields.

    6. ** keyboard shortcut ⌘O. ** Nice! thankyou. Why is it not helping us with mnemoics (?spelling) e.g. command A for anchor command + for make it stick... O = is for Open?

    7. You might find the main 1Password window more useful here.
Sorry no. It drives me nuts having to go to 1password desktop just to delete a darn entry. I just leave them in there then and put up with having a messy database. It takes way too long for the desktop app to open. And its another window. and then i have to close it. More importantly it takes away my focus. Makes a big job out of a small job. Not going to happen in my world. 1password Desktop is for bigger jobs, not on the fly jobs. deleting is on the fly. Trashing permanently is bigger jobs. Just like Mac OSX trash works. we can send to trash from everywhere... and then permanently delete is a "thinking/bigger task". Hope this perspective is considered.

Thank-you ever so much for taking the time and going thru my questions.

I apologize if my reply is not easy to follow. I did not know how to do in line as you did. I am just getting comfortable with these forum posts.

    For 1**
Open in the identical spot I move it to last.**

Today I discovered, if you move the 1Password Mini icon in the top right (CMD and drag as I have Bartender App installed), then that darn pop-out of the pass-code that you anchor, does try its best to go top left. Intereasting.

But if I have the 1Password Mini Icon about center screen on Status Bar, the pop-out placement/location for the pass-code detail changes almost each time. It is not remembered. Essentially opens right in front of your face, so you immediately go to move it.

    Hi @helppls,

    1. I was chatting to one of the devs and I learnt something new about 1Password mini in the process. When 1Password mini opens up centred in the screen we behave differently compared to if you drag the menu elsewhere. Partly this applies to people using multi-monitor setups where mini is meant to respect the window in focus. If you select a specific location it will always open there. I don't know quite how it affects anchoring a Login Details bubble. I find that wherever the Item Details bubble appears is where it will be when I anchor it. Like you've discovered, with a bit of tweaking you can potentially find a place where the Item Details bubble always opens to one side. As way of example please see the partial screenshot from my test machine below.
    2. Given ⌘O anchors would this request still make as much of a difference?
    3. I can certainly see where you're coming from but ⌘A is one of those basic keyboard shortcuts in OS X so it might cause more confusion in overriding it, even if select all (what ⌘A does) doesn't make any sense specifically anywhere in 1Password mini.
    4. My suspicion is there would be a level of reluctance to incorporate such a feature. 1Password mini has a very specific goal, to assist in filling and it isn't meant as complete but more compact version of the main window.

Everything of course is open to discussion. Pragmatics do sometimes come into play though as we have the difficult job of prioritising various feature requests and obviously concentrate on fixing bugs when they crop up.

    HI @littlebobbytables

** When 1Password mini opens up centred in the screen we behave differently compared to if you drag the menu elsewhere**

Yes I agree This is my observation but it is not intuitive know-how to the user.
At the very least for me, mini, fails to respect its intent with 2 factors

    • with its current window placement/behaviour
    • and basic things require cog click or anchor/edit click
The intent as I understand is quick and easy access.
Currently out of the box, the popup behavior is intrusive and many standard quick actions are 2 or 3 steps not 1 step. Opening center is the worse, it gets the strongest reaction as it is simply not nice when I am working. My expectation the status bar icon, operates to the great OSX standards of status bar items. It fails in my book.

    Workaround
I moved status icon (as I have Bartender installed, so 1Password does not provide this functionality) to the far right (second in) and now it is behaving nicely. But as you say, it is behaving nicely not because of the status bar placement, but because I am no long moving the darn thing out of the way

keyboard shortcut ⌘O for anchoring in 1Password mini.

not easy to remember. Why would my brain remember a keyboard command application specific that is non-standard. Makes no sense to me.

If all popups were to be anchored by this shortcut. Then it would embedded in my brain. The standard UI is top right to anchor.

    Hi @helppls,

You are correct, the spatial aspect of 1Password mini isn't obvious even from usage and I suspect there are a couple of us that don't know all the details, as I say I only learned about this recently myself. It's something we could communicate better.

I can enquire about altering the anchoring but I don't think I can argue for us adhering to standards as I'm not aware of any. Little Snitch (I'm a user myself btw) is possibly the only other application I can think of that has such a feature and even then only because you prompted my memory. I would agree that if anchoring was a standard UI feature from an OS X library that we should follow standard conventions but I don't think it's specified by Apple. As I say though, I can enquire on your behalf.
