Failed to open 1Password database

When I start up my computer or open 1Password I get the message:
'Failed to open 1Password database'.
The following image shows the message box.

What do you recommend doing?

Some additional information.
I left my Powerbook (OS 10.9.5) on during the night and in the morning the fan was working and had a spinning wheel.
A message on the upper right corner said 1Password could not access the database.
I managed to close all apps except for Safari and even Force Quit did not work and could not open Terminal.
I then had to hard reset it.
Now I get the above message.

Any help will be much appreciated.

    Hi @hms,

1Password would only show that message if it really had to. I can't explain why or how the OnePassword.sqlite is damaged but we have you covered by the regular backups that occur. I would restore the latest backup as it suggests and that should restore your vault. Now it might mean any changes, deletions or additions in as many as the last 24 hours are lost (or far less, it depends on when the backup was precisely taken) and if you haven't made any changes recently you should lose nothing at all.

Just to let you know how it works, 1Password will attempt to backup as often as once a day but only if there have been changes to the vault since the last backup. So if you see a period of days between backups it's either nothing changed or you haven't run 1Password for a while. If you run 1Password daily then you can feel confident that the backups contain everything. As I say, all that you might lose are any differences between when this happened and the last backup.

Please do let us know how you get along and I am sorry this happened to you :(

On behalf of littlebobbytables, you're very welcome! I hope it helped to restore 1Password from a backup, but if you have any trouble with that, please let us know. We're always glad to help! :)
