Can't Restore 1Password5 Info From My Hard Drive...
Hello,
I just got my MacBook Air's hard drive wiped by the folks at the Apple store and I backed up all my files prior to that on my WD external hard drive just as I should...
Now I've reinstalled 1Password and as I was going through the prompts it asked me to restore my 1Password info from a backup. Now it's asking me where the information is in the hard drive and I can't find it.
I've tried looking for both the Library/Application Support/1 Password and Library/Containers routes and they don't exist. I can get to the "Application Support" folder for the former (but not the next "1 Password" tier) and I can't find the "Containers" folder for the latter. I wasn't syncing with DropBox (definitely will be doing that once this is all sorted out).
Please help...thank you so much. :)

Hi @Aline,
I'm so sorry to hear that you're having trouble locating your 1Password data - that's no good! Now, it sounds like you've already done some searching, but I just want to confirm the full locations that stores your information:
If you purchased 1Password from the Mac App Store
- Datafile: ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Data/OnePassword.sqlite
- Backups: ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Backups
If you purchased 1Password from the AgileBits Store
- Datafile: ~/Library/Application Support/1Password\ 4/Data/OnePassword.sqlite
- Backups: ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Backups
Are these the locations that you're looking for?
I can get to the "Application Support" folder for the former (but not the next "1 Password" tier)
I'm not quite sure I understand - are you not able to open the 1Password folder? Or does it not exist?
I can't find the "Containers" folder for the latter.
Please try using Finder's 'Go to Folder' option in the 'Go' menu, and paste the full file path in the pop-up. The Library folder is hidden by default, but the 'Go' function can help you find it.
I wasn't syncing with DropBox (definitely will be doing that once this is all sorted out).
I think Dropbox is a great way to keep an off-computer backup, just in case anything does go wonky. :)

Hi @Megan, thanks so much for helping me out!
Sorry! I should have been more clear. :) Here's some screenshots of what I'm seeing. In the first one, I am in the Library folder, but I don't see Containers. In the second one, I am in the Library->Application Support folder but I don't see 1Password. These are all enclosed in folders directly from a backup I made a few days ago before the wipe on my hard drive.
I just tried copy pasting those folder addresses you gave me into a "Go To Folder" in the Finder window from the 1Password prompt you see from my screenshots itself. They all either say that the folder cannot be found or it is finding "backups" from the past couple of days from when I installed the app but haven't gotten it open yet, meaning there's nothing in the data because I haven't been using it because I can't access it. This is obviously what is on my computer itself and not on the external hard drive. Maybe I am missing out on how to search just a specific backup date from the external hard drive?
It looks like it just wasn't backed up properly in the first place...if this is the case, is there a way I can just "log in" without any data and I can manually input in the passwords all over again from there (luckily I have a paper copy of all my passwords)? I know my master password. I just need to get past the "Are you an existing user or new user" prompt that keeps asking me for my data...

Hi @Aline,
Thanks so much for getting back to me - I'm sorry for the misunderstanding! I think the easiest way to move forward is to take a closer look at your system. So, with that external hard drive plugged in, I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Mac:
https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/mac.html
Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@agilebits.com
Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.
You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can quickly track down the Report and ensure that it is dealt with quickly. :)
Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

Aline,
It looks like you're in the Root Library ( /Library) instead of your User Library ( /Users/Aline/Library/). Note that in the Finder this Library is normally hidden, so you should click on the "Go" menu item, select "Go to Folder . . ." and paste one of Megan's links in there. Also, the Tilde character (~) is Unix shorthand for /Users/Your_user_name/.

@Megan Here is the Support ID number: #LCU-71897-987
@vplewis Ah, I must have confused myself when I took those screenshots and went through the wrong "route". But I've tried going through the "Users" folder route as you've recommended, too, and nothing shows up (didn't know "Library" was hidden if you go this way though but that would make sense) but even so, when I copy paste Megan's links into a "Go To Folder" search box either nothing shows up or it just gives me "backups" from after the computer was wiped-not the ones that contain my passwords on the hard drive.
Thanks so much everyone...this truly is a mystery to me haha.

Aline,
In that case, you want to make sure your backup disk is mounted and visible, then start the path like this:
Volumes/Name_of_the_Backup_Drive/
where you substitute the actual name of the backup drive.

So I think this is what you mean...just tried this/some similar variations that I thought might work and it still tells me the file can't be found. Perhaps this is wrong?:
Volumes/My Book/Users/Aline/Library/Application Support/1Password\ 4/Data/OnePassword.sqlite

Hi @Aline,
Here is what I would recommend.
- With your external drive connected, open a Finder window and use the keyboard shortcut
⇧⌘G
to open the Go to Folder... window. - Paste into the field the following
/Volumes/My Book/Users/Aline/
and press enter. - If that succeeds and takes you to your old user account on the external hard drive then then one of the following should work
- For AgileBits Store you would want to try visiting
/Volumes/My Book/Users/Aline/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/
- For Apple's Mac App Store you would want to try visiting
/Volumes/My Book/Users/Aline/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/
- If one of those succeeds then, with 1Password not running at all, you would want to copy that entire folder over to its respective location on your hard drive e.g. copy the
1Password 4
folder from/Volumes/My Book/Users/Aline/Library/Application Support/
to~/Library/Application Support/
or the2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper
folder from/Volumes/My Book/Users/Aline/Library/Containers/
to~/Library/Containers/
. - When you next run 1Password it should pick up everything.
The path you wrote in your post unfortunate shows both escaped and non-escaped spaces, as does @Megan's. When you use Finder as above you want unescaped spaces but if you're working on a Terminal prompt they need to be escaped. Combining both though and neither approach responds in a happy manner.
Now if that doesn't yield any joy there is still hope. I know Apple said not to use Time Machine to restore but that doesn't mean we can't do a selective restoration of just the 1Password folder without worrying about causing instability on your freshly installed machine. Hopefully though the steps above will locate your information and get you up and running again but if not don't panic, just post back and we can help you with viewing your old Time Machine backup

Woohoo!! I figured it out with the help of all you guys and everything is all back up and running! I used Time Machine just to find the specific file to restore (the latest .1p4_zip file) and then I used the cool "Go to folder" and ~/Library/ tricks you guys taught me to find it. Thank you for helping me out. I don't know a whole lot about computers so I really appreciate all the help and advice. Have a good one!
