Inconsistent data across categories

How does it happen that password data in an entry the program creates in the "Passwords" category does not match the password data for the matching entry categorized under "Log in"?

The Passwords category is used to save passwords you have generated in 1P the URLs for which don't match a specific item in the Login category. Does that help to explain what is happening? (In other words, it's probably the URLs which differ.)

    Hi @allendulles,

The original idea behind the Password items was more as a temporary storage. The expected sequence was you generate a strong password on a site's change password or account creation page. While 1Password can be set to copy that generated password to the clipboard it's easy to lose it from there. So we create a Password item to act as a safety net. If you then create a new Login item from the browser at the same domain and with the same password the password item is removed and a Login item created from it.

Now if you create Login items from outside the browser e.g. from the main 1Password window, this doesn't happen. Another possibility is if you've been playing with the Password Generator or had to fight a bit to create an allowable password then you might have created multiple passwords, each generating their own Password item.

What I would say is as long as you have a valid Login item for a site whose last modified date is after the creation date for these Password items then you're probably safe to remove them.

Now I said at the start that these items were originally intended as temporary items. I personally find the category useful for things such as application passwords (relatively rare) or iOS app PINs (again, fairly rare) so I use it for permanent storage too.

Does that explanation help at all to possibly explain extra items?
