Family license key/file and v.4/5 - license applied today to v.4 and not to v.5

I've been a 1password iOS user since 4/14/2014 and have loved your software. I've been helping my Mom get set up with 1password. She purchased a family license 4/24/2014 and got started with a few passwords until she lost her master password a couple of days later and so hadn't been able to get into the software until today, 5/21/2015 a little over a year later.

Today, in the software I noticed that her mac app was running under trial mode as she hadn't yet applied the license key -- so I searched through her email and applied the license key without realizing that her 1password is version 4 and that part of the process of getting her back up to speed is also upgrading her mac from 10.9 to 10.10 which I'm now seeing also involves upgrading 1password to version 5 and from a license key to a license file...

With all the excitement in getting her master password to work, I wanted to get her started right away on getting her organized updating her passwords, but now I'm seeing I should have first upgraded her to 10.10 and then somehow transferred her unused family license key to a family license file to be applied to version 5 instead of to version 4.

Is it possible for AgileBits support to send a family license file from her original family license key (which was applied to version 4 today, 5/21/2015) to apply to version 5? I do have her 1password family license key and other information accessible... Thank you for your time and help!

Eric

    Hi @ehampton12,

I have good news for you! 1Password 4 and 5 for Mac both use the same license file, so if you were able to apply the license to version 4, then you can do the exact same thing to register version 5. Furthermore, 1Password is licensed per person and per platform, rather than per device, so your mom's license can be applied to her Mac(s) as many times as needed.

We recently made improvements to the license emails that we send out; it's now easier than ever to apply the license. So what I'd suggest after you upgrade to OS X Yosemite and install 1Password 5, is to go to this page and enter the email address your mother used to register 1Password. That will resend her licenses in a new email. In that email, under 1Password 5 for Mac, you should see a link that says "Click here to apply your 1Password license." When you click that link (with 1Password running and unlocked), it will open a page in the default browser which automatically downloads and applies the license to 1Password. Additionally, the license file will automatically be stored within 1Password in the Software Licenses category for future reference.

However, because of the way you talked about license key and license file, I'm wondering if it might be possible that she was previously running 1Password 3? That was the last version that used a license key (the text string of letters and numbers) rather than a license file. To upgrade the license from 1Password 3 to either 4 or 5 would require a new purchase. But customers with a license key can get a great discount on an upgraded license.

That should set you on the right track, but I'll be happy to elaborate if you have any further questions. Thanks for helping your mom get the most out of 1Password! :)
