The option for icloud sync isn't showing up in preferences>sync

I purchased 1password for my iphone through itunes a while back. Now, I would also like to add this to my Mac, and signed up for the trial download. I have upgraded to Yosemite and have the latest software update on my iPhone so that is not the issue. I also have icloud enabled on my Mac. However, I can't get icloud sync to work, which is a primary reason I am looking at this service. It is not even showing up as an option. Only dropbox and folder are showing up as options. Any ideas?

The version you downloaded as a trial from AgileBits can't use iCloud for syncing. Apple closed off that option for application they don't sell from one of their app stores when Yosemite arrived and AgileBits adopted their new CloudSync protocols. This explains why you can't use iCloud from the trial version. When you get ready to purchase, if iCloud syncing is that important to you, be sure you buy your copy from that Mac App Store.

There are advantages to staying with the AgileBits store, if you're willing to entertain Dropbox for your cloud solution. Apple doesn't allow developers to offer discounts for upgrades, but AgileBits does. That's one good reason to stick with what you have. But it's obviously your choice.

    Hi @okkbow,

Hopefully you found hawkmoth's reply informative. If you still have any questions at all please do ask.

As hawkmoth covered, as of iOS 8/Yosemite/iCloud Drive, Apple decided to start enforcing restrictions on which applications can access iCloud related frameworks. One of these frameworks is CloudKit which is what iCloud Sync needs. 1Password for iOS will always be able to use iCloud because the only way to obtain an iOS app is via Apple's store. The same doesn't apply to Macs which is why we have this difference between the two versions.

If after the trial you like 1Password for Mac but intend to purchase the Mac App Store version for iCloud Sync support then this article on Switching to the version of 1Password from the Mac App Store will probably be of interest. It's pretty simple thankfully, the first time you run the Mac App Store version it sees you've been running the AgileBits Store version and imports the vault. The trick is to then remove the AgileBits Store version of the application from your /Applications/ folder so you don't accidentally keep using it.

As I say, if you still have any questions at all please do ask

Thanks so much, this makes sense. Appreciate the help! I will try the dropbox technique during the trial. Maybe it will suffice.

  • Many of us here at AgileBits are using Dropbox as our preferred sync solution, myself included. :)
