1PW app doesn't show modified pw's generated in Mini
I just created new pw's for two login items using pw generator on a website's update password page. Site requires one of only about 8 special characters, so I modified one character and filled it.
After doing the second one, I mistakenly ok'd to update the first login, then looked in the 1PW app and noticed that the new passwords are not in the list when I select Passwords in the source list. Where did they go?
The login items are showing two different passwords but both modified today. Now I don't know which is which, and I tried logging in to the web site with the 2nd login and it didn't recognize it; changed to the pw of the 1st login, also not recognized, and I'm locked out of the site for 24h.
Posting two other nagging issues as well, don't know if related or not.
Thanks for any help in correcting this.

Hi @davidn,
I'm not sure I understand the order of the steps you took that led to this problem. Do you mean you changed your password on the 1st site, were prompted by 1Password to update your Login item for that site but you didn't make select either option, then you went to a 2nd site and changed your password there, and then you chose the option to update the Login for the 1st site? I may have misunderstood your description.
When you click the Fill button in 1Password mini's Password Generator (or if you click the ▼ button next to Fill and choose Copy), that will create a new Password item in 1Password. When you submit the 'change password' form on the website, 1Password usually detects that and asks if you want to update your existing Login item for that site. At that point, if you choose to update the Login item, the corresponding Password item will be moved to the Trash in 1Password, as it's no longer needed.
On the other hand, if you choose not to update the Login item when prompted (or if 1Password doesn't ask if you want to update it), the Login item will still have the previous password, and you'll find the new one in the Passwords category (so you can choose to copy it to the Login item).
I'm not quite clear on the steps you took or what went wrong, but if you generated a new password and the corresponding Login item wasn't updated, you should first check the Passwords category in the main 1Password app (which you may have done). To make it easier, you can sort the list of Passwords by Date Created. If you can't find the new password there, try selecting the Trash in 1Password, and see if there are any Password items there that contain your new password.
If you're still having trouble, it might help to find your Login items for those sites, and click the "show previously used passwords" button in the item details. Depending on what happened, maybe the previous password will work?
If that doesn't help, please take a look at this this knowledgebase article: I can no longer log into a website after changing my password
Please let us know how it all goes, thanks!

Hi Drew_AG, thanks for the quick reply;
1. went to website's new password page
2. used mini pw generator (from browser toolbar) to create a new pw
3. new pw had a special character not allowed by site, so put cursor in the pw field and changed it to an acceptable character
4. clicked fill
5. site approved and 1pw offered to update the Login item, which I ok'd
6. confirmed log in worked
7. went back to the same site to update a family member pw
8. repeated steps 2-4
9. site approved and 1pw offered to update Login item, which I ok'd too quickly (my fault not 1PW)--1pw had identified the first Login item, not the second Login item with a different user name (which was displayed on the web page) for some reason
10. seeking to correct this, I went to the Passwords source list, sorted by Created and Modified, and could not find the newly generated passwords. Result is 1st login's newly made pw gone, 2nd one not accepted by web site.
11. I will repair all this by once again going through the web site's change password process more slowly some day but for now the Login items are incorrect.
12. reading your note above, I checked the Trash in 1PW, and it appears the new pws are there. Why there instead of the Passwords list? no idea. I didn't tell 1PW to trash them. Why does it make sense to put newly created pw's in the Trash?
13. Now I don't know which pw is which so I'll just have to do as noted, go thru the process again. the web site is not one we frequent so it will only take some time. But I still don't understand the logic of Trashing newly created pw's.0 -
Hi @davidn,
Thanks so much for the details about the steps you took, that's really helpful and I think I understand exactly what happened. Basically, you changed the password for two different accounts on the same website, but you accidentally updated the same Login item both times. The result is that the 1st Login item now has the new password for the 2nd website account, and the 2nd Login item still has the old password from that account, which no longer works.
If that's the case, then it should actually be fairly easy to fix this:
- Open the main 1Password app, go to the View menu, and make sure the Conceal Passwords option is disabled.
- Copy the password from the 1st Login item (which should be the new password for the 2nd website account).
- Edit the 2nd Login item and paste the new password (replacing the old one), then Save.
- Go back to the 1st Login item and click the "show previously used passwords" button.
- Copy the second-most-recent password in the list (which should be the new password for the 1st website account).
- Edit the 1st Login item and paste the new password (replacing the old one), then Save.
To address your question about the Trash:
reading your note above, I checked the Trash in 1PW, and it appears the new pws are there. Why there instead of the Passwords list? no idea. I didn't tell 1PW to trash them. Why does it make sense to put newly created pw's in the Trash?
As I mentioned before, when you choose the option to update the Login item, 1Password will update that Login item with the new generated password, and then it will move the corresponding Password item to the Trash. It does that because once it copies the new password into the Login item, that Password item is redundant and no longer needed.
Therefore, when you updated the password for the 1st website account and chose the option to update the 1st Login item, 1Password copied the new password from the 1st Password item into the 1st Login item, then moved the 1st Password item to the Trash. When you updated the password for the 2nd website account, you accidentally chose to update the 1st Login item again, so 1Password copied the new password from the 2nd Password item into the 1st Login item, then moved the 2nd Password item to the Trash.
I hope that helps to explain what happened! Let us know how it goes with the passwords, and if you have more questions about that. Thanks!

Hi Drew_AG;
Yes you got the sequence understanding right! I should have spelled it out more at first but was a bit distressed.
Thanks for the quick suggested procedure, that's what I was going to try.. until I couldn't find the newly generated passwords, which it appears are in the Trash.
Just to keep the confusion down, I'll reset both passwords next time on the site.
For clarity, it appears to me that the newly created passwords were put in the Trash, not that the previous passwords were displaced from the Login item to the trash (which would make sense and is what I think you are explaining). The Login item, after using Password Generator, and ok'ing the Login update, still showed old modification and creation dates, while the passwords in the trash showed the time/day a few minutes prior.
Weird, but in any case, don't worry about replying, I'll just start over next time at that site and go more slowly.0 -
You're very welcome! It's definitely a confusing situation, and can be tricky to explain what happened and how to fix it, so I hope my information was helpful.
For clarity, it appears to me that the newly created passwords were put in the Trash, not that the previous passwords were displaced from the Login item to the trash (which would make sense and is what I think you are explaining).
Newly created Password items (that are created when you use the Password Generator) get moved to the Trash when you choose the option to update the Login item with that new password. The old passwords (that were replaced when updating the Login) show up under the "show previously used passwords" button, not in the Trash.
I think my explanation might have been a little confusing because of the word "password" and how it can refer to a Password item (which you see in the Passwords category in the left sidebar of the 1Password app), or a password field in a Login item (which is what gets updated with the new/generated one, and is used for filling a login form on the website). Basically, the word "password" gets used a lot in explanations like these, and can refer to different things, so I'm sorry if I wasn't clearer about all that. :)
At any rate, resetting the passwords and making sure to update the correct Login items should get things all sorted out for you, so you hopefully won't need to worry about what's going on behind the scenes. If you have more questions or trouble with that, we're here for you!

Thanks Drew_AG;
yeah it is confusing with the terminology. Must be a challenge to type the technically correct terms all day long in the forum responses. I have tried to be as precise as I can.
I think I see what you mean now. Maybe it's the design that's throwing me. I'm thinking of a Generated Password as being a single 'thing'. So it's either in use in the Login Item OR it's in the trash. In this case, it appears when Updating a Login, it seems a newly Generated Password is both active as the current password in the Login Item as well as being in the Trash. Interesting.
In any case I just wen to the site concerned and Generated a new Password and updated the correctly matching login item, tried it and it worked so all is well. No need to reply, thanks.0 -
Great to hear! I'm glad that worked for you. :+1:
And I'm sorry for any confusion. It certainly can be difficult to keep it all straight! Just to clarify, a generated password is just a string of text (letters, numbers, symbols) which can be filled at a website, stored in a Password item by 1Password automatically when filled (just in case), and then saved in your Login item for the site should you choose to keep it. Cheers! :)
