Installing on new computer - endless loop

I've just downloaded and installed 1Password on my MacBook Pro (Yosemite 10.2.2) after setting it up on my iMac yesterday. When I get to the setup screen I click "I've used 1Password before" and then on the next screen select "Another device" and nothing happens. So I click "More Information" and am taken to this help page: https://support.1password.com/guides/mac/finding-existing-1password-data-during-setup.html where all it tells me to do is click "More Information" which then just brings me back to that page. Help. What do I do next?

1Password Version: 5.3.2
Extension Version: 4.3.1.90
OS Version: OS X 10.2.2
Sync Type: Not Provided

    Hi @ericamena,

I'm sorry for the confusion about that article! The idea is that the article is supposed to explain how to set up one of the sync options between multiple computers/devices. It looks like you're using the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac, so your best option to sync between your Macs will be to use Dropbox sync.

Have you tried setting that up in 1Password on the iMac? Once you do that, you'll be able to choose the Dropbox option during the setup of 1Password on your MacBook Pro.

Hopefully this helps, but please let us know if you have any trouble with that, or if you have more questions. Thanks!

I'm not thrilled with having all my passwords, etc. anywhere near Dropbox... Can't it be done over my network?

    Hi @ericamena,

If you don't want to use Dropbox sync, there are definitely other options! First, I want to mention that we're very confident about storing 1Password data in the cloud (Dropbox or otherwise), as your data file is encrypted with an exceedingly secure encryption algorithm called AES. Even if someone were to acquire a copy of your 1Password data file, it would be extremely difficult (approaching impossible in a human lifetime) for them to actually gain access to your data without your master password. You can find more information about that in this knowledgebase article: Is it safe to sync my data over the cloud?

Now, about those other (non-Dropbox) options I mentioned: To sync between multiple Macs using the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac, you can use the Folder sync option with another sync service. Folder sync works well with various cloud sync services that are similar to Dropbox, and we mention some of those in this User Guide article. The way it works is that Folder sync points to a sync file somewhere locally on the Mac, and the cloud sync service copies that data to/from the cloud and your other Mac.

Instead of using a cloud sync service, you could configure Folder sync with a network volume (like a Time Capsule or other NAS). The best way to do this is to set up Folder sync to point to a local folder on the Mac, and then use a tool such as rsync (or another file copy tool) to copy the contents of the folder to/from the network volume. You can find some more information about that in our Folder Sync guide (see the above links).

Another option is to have Folder sync point to a sync file stored on a removable drive (like an external hard drive or USB flash drive). 1Password can detect when that drive is connected to the Mac, and will sync with it. This doesn't use a cloud sync service at all, but you would need to remember to connect the drive to each Mac when you want to sync 1Password.

Does that help? If you have more questions about that, please let us know. :)

    Greetings,

My iMac died, my backups both in the cloud (Backblaze) and my Super Duper (nightly sync to a USB disk) apparently excluded systems files where my 1password data was stored. Thankfully, my iPhone has been syncing automatically with the desktop. It is my only copy of my data, that I have found so far.

I want to install 1password 5 on a new Mac (Yosemite) and use my iPhone to import my password data to my new computer.

I am getting stuck at this "another device" option as well.

My apologies, but the explanation above does not seem to cover what I am trying to do. I do apologize if I am not seeing the obvious.

    Sincerely yours,
    Greg

My apologies, it occurred to me to go into the app settings.

In the iOS app there is the option to create backup.

Then connect to iTunes and offload the Backups folder to the desktop.

Then choose From backup option rather than another device. Imported right in and right back to where I was.

    Hi @gkrodg00,

No apologies necessary, I'm just happy you were able to get your 1Password data from your iPhone to your Mac! :)

Using the backup/restore option is great for a 1-time transfer of your 1Password data, but if you'd like to keep your data synced on a regular basis, you'll probably want to set up Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync.

Hopefully you're all set, but if you have more questions or need anything else, just let us know - we're always happy to help! :)
