Hi there

I spilt coffee over my macbook pro a few weeks back :( I had been using ipassword for about a month and saving all my passwords etc when prompted.
I now have a new macbook ( and a less healthy bank balance) but not sure how to get ipassword up and running again. Can anyone help?

thanks

Sam

There are three things involved, the program, your license, and your data.

If you got the program direct from AgileBits, just download it again. If you got it from the Mac App Store, log in to the App Store with your AppleID and download it.

For the license, if you bought from AgileBits probably simplest is to go to the bottom of the page https://support.1password.com and ask for a copy to be sent to you. If you bought through the App Store, no license if needed as the purchase is tied to your Apple ID.

As for your data, AgileBits do not have a copy. Do you have a backup? Time Machine, clone, Dropbox, or the like? If you do not have any backups, I am sorry but your data is lost. There might, however, be ways of pulling the data off your old machine.

Don't eat or drink, especially drink, near your computer!!

Thanks for getting back to me -- yes , point taken. No food or drink near my mac again :)

I bought it via the app store and I do have a back up but when I go to restore from back up and navigate to 1password on my applications it's not highlighted ?

    Thanks again

    Hi @sammarshallart,

I'm sorry to hear about your (former) MacBook! I can imagine you (and your wallet) were not too happy about that. I had a close call with a spilled milkshake once, but luckily my MacBook still worked - I imagine hot coffee is a bit more "lethal" in that situation, though.

I do have a back up but when I go to restore from back up and navigate to 1password on my applications it's not highlighted

From your description, it sounds like you're trying to choose the 1Password.app when you try to restore from a backup - but that's only the app itself, and your data & backup files would have been stored elsewhere on your Mac. Do you have a full backup of your old Mac? If so, this knowledgebase article should help you find your 1Password data / backup files in the backup of your Mac: Where does 1Password store its data?

As that article explains, the Mac App Store version of 1Password would have created backup files in this location:

    ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Backups/

That's where you would want to look in the full backup from your old Mac. If you can find the 1Password backup files from your old Mac, you can use those to restore 1Password data on your new Mac.

On the other hand, if you have a full backup of your old Mac, you should be able to do a full restore on the new Mac, and 1Password should already be set up with your data, the same as it was when that backup was made. Have you tried that? What sort of backup do you have of your old Mac?

Alternately, did you ever use one of the sync options in 1Password on your old Mac? If you had been using Dropbox or iCloud sync in 1Password, your data should still be stored in Dropbox or iCloud, and you can choose to sync that data when setting up 1Password on the new Mac.

Please let us know how it all goes, and we'll be happy to help if you need more assistance with that. Thanks!

Thanks so much Drew! that's so helpful. I do have a full timemachine back up from my old mac but it's been impossible to just 'restore' as they sold me a mac with much less storage than my old one so I've been having to transfer all my data manually. I will try the first option and hunt out the data using the directions posted.

    Thanks again !

You're very welcome, @sammarshallart! You should definitely be able to retrieve your 1Password backup files from Time Machine. You might have trouble finding that location in Time Machine if the Library folder in your Mac user folder (i.e. ~/Library/) was hidden at the time of the backup - if so, we can give you additional steps to help you with that.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes for you! :)

    Hi @sammarshallart,

Sure thing! As long as you're able to browse through the files in your Time Machine backups, you should be able to get to your 1Password backups by following these steps:

    • Quit 1Password, if it's open.
    • From the Finder, click the Go menu and select Go to Folder.
    • Copy and paste this into the Go to the Folder box (including the ~ symbol): ~/Library/Containers/
    • Click the Go button, and the Finder should take you to that folder.
    • Now enter Time Machine by clicking the icon in the Dock, or by clicking the icon in the menu bar and selecting Enter Time Machine (your screen should show a bunch of Finder windows in a field of starry space).
    • From the Containers folder (which should be open in Time Machine), go to 2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Backups.
    • You can select individual backup files to restore, or restore the whole Backups folder.

Please let us know how it goes!

Hi Drew - thanks for this . When I go to finder and enter that address I get a page with loads of folders - it doesn't just take me to to one!
I think I might have to start from scratch and create a new account on 1password and go through the labourious process of entering all my passwords again!

    Thanks for all your help

    Hi @sammarshallart,

If you use the Go to Folder action on ~/Library/Containers/ it will result in a relatively long list of folders, one per sandboxed application on your Mac to be precise. The important part would be that when you enter Time Machine that you see a 2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper in the list, that will indicate that there is hope. Does that bit behave as we expect it to or do you have troubles before you reach that point?
