Using 1Password on a NAS
I am setting up network area storage and creating a personal cloud. I would then move synced accounts like 1Password onto my storage. I currently use Dropbox which I like but am rapidly out-growing and will soon be incurring higher storage fees.
Have any of you had experience doing this? Is it a good idea?

Hi @TomSafety,
It's certainly possible to use a NAS to sync your 1Password data, although it's not quite as easy as Dropbox sync. The best way to do that is to use the Folder sync option in 1Password to point to a local folder on your Mac, and then use a tool such as rsync (or another file copy tool) to copy the contents of the folder to/from the NAS. You can find some more information about that in our Folder sync guide.
The reason you'll need to have 1Password sync to a local folder which is then copied to/from the NAS with another tool (instead of syncing directly to the NAS) is because 1Password gets upset when it encounters latency or other network issues when it's trying to read/write to a sync folder.
Now, I should mention that we cannot officially support a setup like that, but many customers have a similar setup which seems to work well for them, so it's certainly something you can try if you're looking for an alternate sync solution.
Hopefully this helps, but if you have more questions or need anything else, just let us know! :)

Interesting. Thank you.
I have now reconsidered this in the light of what you say. Syncing on the NAS seems to add an unnecessary level of complication.
Besides, my real problem with Dropbox is the increasing amount of bulky files I have to store on there that rarely get consulted. Once I set up the NAS I will remove the bulk of the long term storage and will be left with the relatively small sync files for apps like 1Password.My 1Password keychain currently only weighs in at 10mb!

Hi @TomSafety,
Personally I would go with your approach. As you say, once you've moved the bulky items off all you're left with is the much smaller 1Password.agilekeychain. Leaving that in Dropbox will ensure seamless syncing with all platforms and takes advantage of Dropbox's conflict resolution which 1Password is aware of. As long as you don't mind Dropbox it is a good way of keeping 1Password synchronised
