Synching not working

My passwords are not syncing across devices. I'm using dropbox to sync, and have verified that dropbox is not paused. On Macs running 10.10.3. What are the next steps. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Sync is no longer working. I use dropbox to sync on an apple platform (IOS 8.3, several Macs 10.3.3). I've verified that dropbox is not paused on any of the devices. I've re-booted all devices. What are the best next steps?

    1Password Version: 5.3.2
    Extension Version: 4.3.1
    OS Version: OS X 10.3.3, IOS 8.3
    Sync Type: Dropbox

@szimmet: Sorry for the trouble! It sounds like you're only syncing Macs. Is that correct?

The simplest step is to verify that Dropbox is syncing anything by simply creating a new file in your Dropbox folder and seeing if it shows up on the website and then the other Mac. Please try the steps in this guide to help narrow down where the problem lies, and let me know what you find. We'll get to the bottom of this! :)

Thanks very much Brenty. Yes, only synching Macs. I will try that and be back in touch if needed.

Great! We've found that those troubleshooting steps will resolve the vast majority of Dropbox Sync issues, but we're here if you get stuck! :)

    Hi @szimmet,

There are a couple of approaches. We could ask you for a series of diagnostic reports and see if the logs highlight something.

Assuming you're running 1Password 4/5 everywhere though another approach would be to throw away the potentially broken 1Password.agilekeychain and have 1Password create new sync data.

The quick summary would be to disable sync on one of your Macs, and tell it to delete the sync data at the same time. You would then re-enable Dropbox sync and it would force 1Password to create a new .agilekeychain. You would then need to re-enable sync on each Mac and device as they will stop syncing when they realise the original .agilekeychain is no longer.

Now that's a very quick summary. If you're really comfortable with 1Password that might be all you need. It was more to briefly cover what I imagine are the two approaches to your issue given you are saying sync was once working and simply stopped.

If reinitialising the .agilekeychain sounds like something you'd like to do but you would prefer more steps just say and we'll guide you through the process. If you want us to look at the logs and see if they indicate something we can show you how to do that too. Let us know your preference and we'll take it from there

I did a secure note on each device (iPhone, two Macs) and each note is visible everywhere. However, I changed a password on a bank account on one of the Macs, and it is NOT showing up on the other iPhone or the other Mac. Given this additional info, what do you suggest? Thanks.

    Hi @szimmet,

I noticed you posted about this sync problem on both our Mac forum and our Saving and Filling in Browsers forum, so I've merged them into a single discussion so we don't duplicate efforts or cause confusion between different threads.

So, it sounds like Dropbox sync is working - at least to a certain extent - since a new Secure Note added on one device shows up on the others. But if that works, I don't know why a different change would not sync. Just to clarify, when you say you changed a bank account password, are you referring to a password field in a Bank Account item in 1Password? Or did you change the password of a Login item that you use to sign into your bank's website? Did you make that password change directly in the 1Password app? Or in the case of a Login item password, did you make that change from the website's change password form (possibly using the Password Generator in 1Password mini)?

I think the answers might help us to narrow down the cause of the problem. Thanks in advance!

I changed the password to the bank account login item within 1password, then updated to the new password on the bank's website. The password change I made within 1password on my iMac didn't sync across to my iPhone or other iMac. Thanks for your help.

Thanks @szimmet! Can you please try a quick test from either iMac:

    • Open Dropbox.com in your web browser.
    • Login to your Dropbox account, then find the 1Password.agilekeychain folder.
    • Open that folder and click on the 1Password.html file to launch 1PasswordAnywhere.
    • Enter your master password to unlock your vault.
    • Find the bank account Login item you changed, and see if it shows the new password or the old password.

In 1PasswordAnywhere, does that Login item show the new or old password?

That's a great suggestion. It shows the old password.

What do you suggest, given that dropbox has the old password for this item, but did correctly upload the secure note? Thanks.

    Hi @szimmet,

Ok, we're definitely getting closer to solving the mystery! :)

So if the new password hasn't synced to your Dropbox.com account, that could mean the 1Password app isn't writing that change to the 1Password.agilekeychain in the local Dropbox folder on that Mac, or it could mean Dropbox isn't syncing that change from the local Dropbox folder to the Dropbox servers.

There are a couple things you can check. First, open 1Password on that Mac and go to 1Password > Preferences > Sync. If you have multiple vaults, make sure you select the one that has the bank account Login item you changed. Is Dropbox still selected as the sync option for that vault? If so, does it still show the correct file path (probably [Mac username] > Dropbox > 1Password > 1Password.agilekeychain or something similar)?

Next, click the Dropbox icon in your menu bar at the top of that Mac. Does that show "Up to date" or "Syncing paused", or something else? (If it says "Syncing paused", click the gear icon and select Resume Syncing.)

Thank you. I have only 1 vault (primary vault). Dropbox is selected in preferences/sync, and it does show that path, and says last synded 3 minutes ago. Clicking on Dropbox in the menu box shows "Up to date".

    Hi @szimmet,

Thanks for checking those things. Now, assuming Dropbox is working correctly on your other Mac and iPhone, and 1Password is pointing to the same keychain in Dropbox on those, then it's possible something is wrong with the 1Password.agilekeychain. If so, resetting Dropbox sync should solve that.

First, you may want to backup your data as a precaution. On each Mac, open 1Password and go to File > Backup. On your iPhone, you can follow these steps to backup your data.

When you're ready, go ahead and follow these steps to reset Dropbox sync:

On one Mac (either one is fine):

    • Open 1Password and go to 1Password > Preferences in the menu bar.
    • Click the Sync tab, then change the sync from Dropbox to None.
    • Check the box to Delete data from Dropbox, then click Disable Sync.
    • Open your Dropbox folder on that Mac and make sure the .agilekeychain has been deleted.
    • In 1Password, go back to 1Password > Preferences > Sync.
    • Select Dropbox from the “Sync vault with” pop-up menu.
    • Click the Choose button and select your main Dropbox folder (then click Open).
    • Click Create New to create a new 1Password.agilekeychain file in Dropbox/1Password.
    • Allow Dropbox to fully sync.

Your other Mac and your iPhone should stop syncing when they realize the .agilekeychain has been removed from Dropbox. You can follow these steps to re-enable Dropbox sync:

    On your other Mac:

    • Open 1Password and go to 1Password > Preferences > Sync.
    • Select Dropbox from the “Sync vault with” pop-up menu.
    • Click the Choose button and select the 1Password.agilekeychain file in Dropbox/1Password (then click Open).
    • Click Merge with Existing to start syncing (enter your master password if prompted).

    On your iPhone:

    • Open 1Password and go to Settings > Sync > Start Syncing.
    • Choose Sync with Dropbox.
    • When you see your Dropbox account name, tap on the name (do not tap on the 'i' icon).
    • When asked to choose a vault, choose 1Password/1Password.agilekeychain.
    • If you see a Vault Mismatch message, tap More Info and then tap Merge These Vaults Anyway.
    • Enter your master password if prompted.

Please let us know how it all goes, and if you have questions about any of that. Thanks!

Would it be simpler to just enable cloud syncing? Thanks for your help.

@szimmet: It sounds like Dropbox Sync is the best option in your case, as it's supported in all current versions of 1Password across all platforms. iCloud Sync is only allowed in apps purchased in Apple's stores.

But in any case, 1Password doesn't actually do any of the syncing, so it doesn't have any insight into what happens after it writes changes to your vault, which is why I suggested checking out the Dropbox troubleshooting guide. The steps Drew_AG suggested covers some of that ground as well. Be sure to let us know what you find!

I followed the steps outlined by Drew_AG. Everything went smoothly and as you described. However, when re-opened dropbox and checked the password to that one account, it was still the old account. I wrote down that password, re-synced the other devices, replaced that password manually on one of those devices, and it synced across all devices. So, it seems there is an issue with syncing from that one particular mac. What do you recommend?

    Hi @szimmet,

I have to admit, I'm a bit baffled here! If everything went well when you followed my steps, then everything should be fine with 1Password and Dropbox. Now, just to be sure I understand, if you make another/different change to 1Password on your Mac (for example, add a new Login item), does that sync to your other Mac and iPhone? From your previous troubleshooting, it sounds like other changes were syncing, but there was a problem changing the password of one specific item - so I'm curious if other changes still sync correctly or not.

Or, does syncing work when you make changes from your iPhone or one Mac, but not if you make changes from the other Mac? At this point, I'd like to figure out if the problem is specific to changes made on one Mac, or if the problem is specific to changes to a specific item in 1Password. It might help to try again to create a new item on each device and see if all 3 new items appear on all 3 devices.

Please let us know how that goes, and depending on the results, we'll figure out further troubleshooting from there. Thanks for your patience while we try to sort this all out!

I just rechecked everything, and now it seems all is syncing properly. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but all ok at the moment.
    Thanks for your help.

Sometimes sync will have a hiccup if there's a network issue (local or otherwise). I'm glad to hear that it came back for you! :)
