Hi @catman. Please confirm the version numbers you have installed on both your Mac and your iPhone. The current versions are 1Password 5.3.2 for Mac and 1Password 5.4.2 for iOS.

yes it is 5.4.2 iOS. I was looking at the receipt for original, not updated version

Hi @catman,
Thanks for confirming that. It looks like you have a license for the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac, but unfortunately, iCloud sync is only available in the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac. That's because it uses Apple's new CloudKit technology, which can only be used by apps sold through Apple's App Store. We'd absolutely love to be able to include that in the AgileBits Store version of 1Password as well, but unfortunately that's not currently possible. We have more information about that in these knowledgebase articles:
Why does iCloud require iOS 8, OS X 10.10, and the Mac App Store?
I do not see the option to sync with iCloud in 1Password for Mac
Unfortunately Apple doesn't currently provide a way to convert a license for the AgileBits Store version of 1Password to the Mac App Store version. So if you wanted the Mac App Store version of 1Password, you would need to purchase that separately. Alternately, with the AgileBits Store version, you can switch to Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync.
I'm sorry for the confusion about that! If you have more questions about your sync options or need help to set that up, please let us know.

Thanks. It is unfortunate the issue of where to purchase the app from was not made clear along with the alert the new version was necessary.

Hi @catman,
I'm not sure exactly which alert you saw about upgrading, however the AgileBits Store definitely does state that iCloud sync requires the Mac App Store version. I am sorry for any confusion about that, though!
In case it makes a difference, I wanted to mention that an advantage of purchasing the upgrade from the AgileBits Store is that we're able to give you an upgrade discount. Apple does not give us the ability to do upgrade pricing on the Mac App Store, so you would have had to pay full price to buy it from there.
As for your syncing options in the AgileBits Store version, Dropbox is an excellent choice. It's how I have always synced my 1Password data and still do. Your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted, so with regard to security, there's no difference between syncing 1Password data with Dropbox or iCloud. 1Password simply doesn't depend on the security of either to protect your data.
Dropbox also has the advantage that it can be used to share vaults with friends, family, and co-workers. It's not possible to share anything between iCloud accounts.
Please do let us know if you have more questions about that or need anything else - we're always happy to help!

Thank you for your help - I've gone back to dropbox for 1password file.
