Confused about the sync process to a new installation
So I put 1P on a new installation. I have the data to sync on my iPhone. I get to the window to click on Another Device. I then click on More Information, which takes me to a page that shows me the window I was just on and tells me to click More Information. Say what?
So where's the information about how to sync? Shouldn't that be the next step?
Thanks.
1Password Version: 5,4b16
Extension Version: Haven't got there yet
OS Version: 10.10.3
Sync Type: iCloud

Hi @TomWolsky,
Thanks for the screenshot. I'm sorry, but I think I have some slightly bad news.
If you're syncing to iCloud on your iPhone, you're looking for an iCloud button, but due to Apple's restrictions, iCloud sync on a Mac requires the version of 1Password from the Mac App Store. You're not seeing the iCloud option on this screen because you have the version of 1Password from our website. If you had bought it within 30 days, I'd offer you a refund so you could get the Mac App Store version without buying 1Password twice, but I see that you bought it over a year ago.
So your available sync options from here are:
- Dropbox: just as automatic as iCloud sync, available on all platforms, and with the added features of 1PasswordAnywhere and vault sharing
- Wi-Fi: If you choose wi-fi sync, you'll need to select "I'm new to 1Password" to create a new empty vault which you can then sync via wi-fi
- Buy 1Password again from the Mac App Store at full price for iCloud sync
I know this may not be what you wanted to hear, but Dropbox sync is what I and many of my AgileBits teammates use, and it's a great alternative to iCloud. Hopefully this information will help you find a sync option that works for you. :)

Thanks Vee. Not a great fan of Dropbox myself. I've had 1P for a while but this is the first time I've done a clean installation without migration. So I guess I'll have to find my way back to the new user button. Thanks again.

Hi @TomWolsky,
I'm very sorry for any confusion about that! As far as the "More Information" button goes, we're working on getting that to point to more useful information on our support site.
It sounds like you'd like to use Wi-Fi sync instead of Dropbox. If you still see the "Another device" screen (like in the screenshot you posted), just click the Cancel button. You should be able to choose an option for "I'm new to 1Password" to create a new, empty vault. Make sure you choose the same master password that you use on your iPhone. Once you have a new empty vault, you can set up Wi-Fi sync.
If you need more help with that or anything else, just let us know. :)

Thanks Drew. Haven't had a chance to get back to it yet, but hope to today.

I'm bbbaaaaack, and probably being stupid, but everything I'm seeing seems to point to how to sync my phone to my Mac. My Mac is a clean installation. I would like to WiFi sync my Mac to the content on my phone. Is this possible, or is the way to do this to retrieve a folder from a backup somewhere. Mac migration is unfortunately very limited, and the whole point is to clean the drive and start fresh without bringing over all the dross and cruft from old, bloated users. So, ferret out the 1P folder from a back up, is that the way to go?
Thanks very much.

Hi @TomWolsky,
There are a couple of options, it will depend on which you feel is the easiest.
If you'd like to pull your 1Password data from a back that's definitely possible. As a AgileBits Store user you would find your entire support folder for 1Password is in
~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/
. If you were to copy that entire folder over it would copy all of your old backups plus the vault at the time of the backup. Now just in case you're not familiar with it the~
in a path tells the operating system you're talking about your user account. So say my OS X user account is called LittleBobbyTables, OS X translates~
to/Users/LittleBobbyTables/
and then adds the rest of that path on e.g./Users/LittleBobbyTables/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/
. That should help you find it in your backup with a little luck. Just to clarify, if it were me I would be copying the1Password 4
to my new~/Library/Application Support/
folder. That is one option. You could also create a backup on your iPhone and copy that to your Mac. In the image you supplied you might have noticed you can use a backup to kickstart 1Password for Mac and the backup from 1Password for iOS is compatible. For more information on this we have a page titled Creating and restoring 1Password backups in iTunes (iOS). That will show you how to create and copy the backup from your iOS device to your Mac running iTunes. In the backup is a file that ends in
.1p4_zip
and that is the backup file that 1Password for Mac can use.Lastly, you can seed a new vault in 1Password for Mac using Wi-Fi Sync, it's just a little less obvious than the other way round as you've discovered. The problem is 1Password for Mac is the server and it needs a vault before you can set everything up. If you were to create a brand new vault in 1Password for Mac though and then set up Wi-Fi Sync it will result in everything in 1Password for iOS being pulled to the new vault on your Mac - it definitely won't believe you want an empty vault copied to your iOS device.
All will work, it's really a case of preference and which you feel is easiest for you. If you have a preference and are having trouble with a particular step please do let us know and we'll do our best to go into more depth.

Wow. Lot of information. Thank you. The first method worked fine. Because of an anomaly I seem to be able to access the contents of another user on another partition. One thing though, I had to reboot (probably logging back into the user would have been enough) for the application to see the copied files. I quit 1P. Copied the files over. Launched 1P, but it didn't see the new folders, which struck me as odd. I rebooted and launched the application again, and it had all the information. Thanks very much for your help.

Hi @TomWolsky,
I'm glad we could help you get that all resolved
Just to help you understand that little oddity you experienced. If you quit just 1Password using the traditional
⌘Q
or **1Password > Quit 1Password ** menu option that will have quit just the main window but left the very important 1Password mini running in the background. If that is left running it can cause all sorts of weird behaviour but under normal conditions you do want it running, doing its job. Anyway, that's just a point of interest, the important part is everything seems to be running properly on your new Mac.If you have any more questions do please ask

Thanks for the explanation. Of course that makes complete sense. Forgot about the mini. I don't use it much.
