You can best think of a Vault as a separate collection of 1Password entries that are grouped together, and are only visible when that vault is selected (open).
Most users only need or use one vault - the primary vault. This is the place where you store all your 1Password items.
In some cases, a user may have a need for additional, separate storage collections; for example, a user might want all work-related login credentials to be stored in a separate vault perhaps named Work. This user would switch which vault is active (to 1Password, 1Password Mini and the browser extensions).
Separate vaults can be synced with Dropbox independently, so this gives users the ability to share some portions of their 1Password entries.
Start with a single vault, use 1Password that way, until you feel the need to put some items in a separate vault. At that point, create another vault, and move the items from one vault to the other.
