Changing to a dropbox vault in Mac

Hi,

Just bought a combined Windows/MAC 1Password.

My "real" vault is on my PC and stored on Dropbox.
1Password already existed on my MAC - but I want it now to use the Dropbox vault instead of the existing one.

How do I do that?

Thanks,
Nathan

    Hi @GotThisOneRight,

Just to check that I've understood correctly. You have an existing vault on your Mac and you want to throw this vault away and only use the .agilekeychain that is stored on Dropbox as part of using 1Password for Windows, is that correct?

If it is then the steps required aren't too bad.

    1. On your Mac follow the steps in our How do I start over with an empty vault? guide.
    2. When you next start up 1Password for Mac it should automatically find your 1Password.agilekeychain in Dropbox, if it doesn't then our page on 2. Finding existing 1Password data during setup should be all you need.

I'm confident that those two pages should be all you need to get yourself up and running with a synchronised vault over both platforms  Should you have any questions or issues though please don't hesitate to post back and ask.

    Thanks. That was helpful.

That said, I find that 1Password is an ultra-high-maintenance app.
Boy, the things you need to go through to get it to work properly.
And God forbid you should need to fix something.

The price this app makes you pay to get some privacy is extremely high.

    Hi @GotThisOneRight,

I'm glad the steps from littlebobbytables were helpful for you! :)

Are you referring to the steps you needed to follow in order to start over on your Mac and sync the vault from Windows? If so, that does take a few steps that you wouldn't normally need to follow. And as that implies, now that you have it set up the way you want, it's not something you should need to do again.

An "easier" solution would have been to simply enable Dropbox sync in 1Password on your Mac and merge all of that data with your data from Windows/Dropbox. But you'd still have all the data that had been in 1Password on your Mac, so you'd have to manually go through and delete anything you don't want. Since you didn't want to keep any of the data that was on your Mac, it's usually much easier to go through the steps you followed in order to start over first.

Or, if you were referring to a different problem and you need more help, just let us know - we're here for you!

The price this app makes you pay to get some privacy is extremely high.

The cost of a product is certainly something to consider. Admittedly, 1Password is a premium product, and is priced as such. We do hope that shows in the quality of the software and support we provide. Having said that, we know it's not going to be the right fit for everyone, and we encourage everyone to try it out and make the choice that's right for them, which is why we offer a 30 day free trial on the Mac and Windows versions of 1Password.

Please let us know if you need anything else. We're always happy to help!

    Thanks Drew.

I think I probably spent at least 4-5 hours making this work.
I am not a programmer, but I consider myself very computer- and internet-literate.

This is way too long to spend on an app that is supposed to make your life easier.
Just look at the long discussion threads I had with you guys.

And by price, I was not referring to the dollar price but the trouble.

One thing is certain: your online help is great. It kind of makes me calmer.

I'm really sorry it took you so long to get things working correctly! You're absolutely right - 4-5 hours is way too long. :( To be fair, I don't think that's the normal experience for most of our customers, but we certainly don't want that to be the experience for any of our customers, and I'm sorry your first impression has been less than stellar.

We're always listening to our users and looking into ways to improve our user experience, so we very much appreciate your feedback about all that. 1Password definitely helped make things easier for me as far as password management and keeping track of other information, so now that things are setup and working correctly I do hope you find it useful as well. But if you ever have more questions or run into any other problems, please don't hesitate to contact us again! :)
