item counts in sidebar no longer accurate

I'm running 1Password — Agile Web Store version 5.3.2 (532001) — on OS X 10.10.3. I recently noticed that the sidebar counts are no longer accurate -- for instance, if I look in a folder that has 12 items, the sidebar count might be 1. If I look at the counts on the iOS app (version 5.4.2 on an iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.3), the counts are all accurate. At one point, they were all fine, so I'm guessing this issue got introduced during a recent update to the 1Password desktop app?

1Password Version: 5.3.2
Extension Version: 4.3.1
OS Version: 10.10.3
Sync Type: Wi-Fi

    Hi @bitmender,

I'm sorry you're having an odd problem with the item counts! Just to make sure I understand, is the problem that (for example) you can see 12 items inside a folder, but the item count for that folder shows 1? Or does the item count show 12, but you only see 1 item inside?

Also, are those Smart Folders or regular Folders? Is there also a problem with the item count next to each Category (Logins, Credit Cards, Secure Notes, etc), or does this only seem to happen for the folders you've created? Is the item count correct for All Items, or is that also a problem?

There are a few general things you can try to see if they help:

    • Turn the item counts off, then back on again (from View > Show Item Counts).
    • If that doesn't make a difference, go to Help > Troubleshooting > Restart 1Password mini (you'll need to unlock 1Password with your master password again).
    • If the problem is still there, try restarting your Mac.

If those suggestions don't help, please let us know the answers to my above questions, and we'll continue from there. Thanks!

I've tried the three suggested actions but none cleared up the problem. I first noticed this maybe like a week ago, so I've shut down and restarted my Mac several times since then -- problem doesn't seem to go away.

I'm attaching a partial screen shot that better shows the problem. I do have 3 Smart Folders but they are at the top of the list and therefore offscreen here. In any case, the counts on those 3 Smart Folders do match the sidebar count, so they're fine -- the problem I'm having only affects regular folders. As you can see in the shot, the "Gray" folder has no count in the sidebar but does have 2 items inside the folder. For reference, here's the item counts for the other folders you can see:

    Cook (1) - 1 Email Account
    Covington (1) - 1 Login
    Draper (3) - 2 Login, 1 Email Account
    Emmerson M (3) - 3 Login
    Emmerson P (9) - 6 Login, 1 Password, 1 Secure Note, 1 Wireless Router
    FATHOM Works (7) - 6 Logins, 1 Password
    Fields & Cox (7) - 4 Login, 2 Wireless Routers, 1 Password
    Fields L (2) - 1 Login, 1 Wireless Router
    Fredericks D&D (1) - 1 Login
    Fredericks P&B (10) - 8 Login, 1 Wireless Router, 1 Secure Note
    Gilpin (3) - 2 Logins, 1 Wireless Router
    Gray (2) - 1 Login, 1 Email

The "Fields & Cox" folder contains two subfolders with their own items but the (7) count listed there is just for the items listed at the root level of that folder. I was looking for some kind of pattern here -- like maybe the sidebar count was just Logins and not counting other items -- but none of these counts seem to match up that way.

My full 1Password library contains 592 items. The sidebar counts in the "Categories" section are correct -- Logins has 438 items and shows 438 on the sidebar, etc.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. Let me know if you have any other ideas!

    Hi @bitmender,

Thank you for the screenshot - that's definitely a strange issue! I think I remember seeing something like this once before, and there might have been a problem with the folders themselves. As a test, can you please try this:

    • Go to File > New Folder (you can give the new folder a name, or leave it as the default).
    • Choose one of the folders with the problem (like "Gray").
    • Select all the items in that folder (right-click on one item and choose Select All) and drag them to the new folder.

Does the new folder show the correct number of items? If so, the problem might be with the old folders that show the wrong number. From here, you can either move the items back to their original folder to see if it now shows the correct item count, or you can delete the old folder and keep the items in the new folder (and rename it to match the old one).

Please let us know how it goes, thanks!

Yep, that seems to be a viable fix! I've done about a dozen folders so far and the counts appear to be accurate. Thanks!

Hi Drew, for what it is worth, I have encountered this problem as well on multiple occasions. The work around until it is fixed did work for me as well. I'm also using version 5.3.2 (532001) on Mac OS X 10.10.5. I sync via wifi with an iPhone 6 running 1Password version 5.5.

    Hi @bitb3nd3r,

I'm glad that workaround fixed it for you as well! I don't know for sure, but I suspect there might have been a bug at some point which caused a problem for the item count in old folders, but which doesn't affect new folders. If so, you shouldn't run into the problem again after creating new folders to replace those that had the issue. But if you create a new folder and it starts to have the same issue with the item count, please do let us know. Thanks! :)

    Hi Drew,

For some reason the folders are still experiencing this problem as the ones I changed are again back to their previous or similar state of not showing everything that should be in them. One additional observation I made that I don't recall if it was previously mentioned was if I go to use the 1Password plugin for Firefox or Safari and then navigate to the "Folders" list, the number of entries in each subfolder matches the item count that is shown in the desktop application sidebar next to the created folders. However, the number of entries actually in the folders again does not match what is actually in them. Hope this makes sense.

    Hi @bitb3nd3r,

Hmm, that's definitely very odd! But just to make sure I understand the current situation: In the main 1Password app, the item count number for certain folders is lower than what it should be (although all the items are there when you select those folders). When you view those folders from 1Password mini (i.e. the browser extension), the number of items matches the item count number in the main app (so not all of the items are listed there). Is that correct?

If so, can you confirm that the folders having this problem are all "new" folders that you had previously created to solve the problem with incorrect item counts? Or is it possible any of them are still old folders that might have been created in an older version?

Also, can you please follow these steps to check a setting for some items:

    • In the main 1Password app, in one of the folders with the problem, find an item that is not shown in 1Password mini.
    • Click the Edit button.
    • Near the bottom of the item details, check the setting for "display".
    • If it is set to "Never display in browser", change it to "Always" (then click Save).

Were any of those items set to never display in the browser? If so, do they show up once you change it to "Always"?

    Thanks!
