Hi there,

I have a Mac Pro that is forced to run on 10.6.8 (due to hardware), and I am using 1Password 3.8.2 with Dropbox. This has worked for a while really great! I also have an iPhone that accesses this Dropbox 1Password file (its an older version of the app).

I have a laptop that was just upgraded to Yosemite. I cannot install my current version of 1Password. If I install the new version, will I still be able to sync with my Mac Pro (which is running an older version). How can I ensure that all of my devices will be able to communicate and share 1Password details?

Thanks!

tpsphi

    Hi @tpsphi,

Glad to hear you're interested in upgrading to our latest and greatest release! We'll be happy to help you through the upgrade.

I have a laptop that was just upgraded to Yosemite. I cannot install my current version of 1Password.

First I'd like to point out that you should be able to install 1Password 3 on Yosemite. You can find it in the Legacy section at the bottom of our Downloads page. I've heard of people being able to run it just fine with no problems, but I've also heard of minor issues here and there because it wasn't designed for Yosemite. But if you are unable to install it at all, that is not expected behavior. By any chance, were you using any kind of third-party utility to assist with the installation? I've heard of that causing installation problems with 1Password before.

If you have decided to go ahead and upgrade anyway (please and thank you! :+1: ), we'll need more specific information about which versions of 1Password you currently have installed on the Mac Pro and the iPhone, as well as your version numbers of OS X and iOS, in order to accurately discuss the sync options. Thanks in advance!

@tpsphi: Just to expand on what Vee said, the biggest hurdles in using 1Password 3 on newer versions of OS X or in an environment with newer versions of 1Password are related to the fact that 1Password 3 has not been in active development for some years now:

    • 1Password 3 and its extensions will not be updated to work with newer browser releases
    • 1Password 3 won't be updated for newer OS X features or compatibility
    • 1Password 3 does not know about features that were added in 1Password 4 and 5

For the most part, you shouldn't have any trouble using 1Password 3 even now; however an OS or browser update could break something. Using 1Password 3 with OS X and browser versions it was designed for will give the best results.

The one thing that may be cause for concern is that, in using 1Password 3 in an environment where you're syncing data with newer versions, some issues can arise. Editing items in one version can have undesirable results when going back to the other, as 1Password 3 just doesn't know anything about newer sections supported in 1Password 4 and 5. So while you can sync data between 'generations', it's best not to depend on that kind of setup indefinitely.

Depending on which OS, 1Password, and device versions you're using, I can go into more detail if you have any questions. :)

    You rock!!

I used the link provided and that version worked for me using Chrome's extension. Safari does not work, but that's cool. The app does, and so does my main browser. This will work for now, as my main system is an old 2006 MacPro that is stuck in 10.6.8 (for hardware reasons). Until I upgrade that machine, I cannot upgrade my version of 1Password (to ensure there is no compatibility issues as shared).

I'm a very happy customer and recommend your wonderful app all the time. Now I can also share how great the support is for legacy systems and how responsive you both were :)

    Have a great day!

You're super welcome, @tpsphi! We're so glad we could help you find a workable solution for 1Password on your older Mac.

And thanks for the kind words! High five for teamwork, @brenty! :chuffed:
