how to share my account

My wife and I use MAC OS X Yosemite. I want to share my 1Password acct with her so she can use my passwords and create her own. though its fine if we can access all. I have dropbox but it is full. Is it possible for an easy explanation for a retiree that explains 1) how she downloads 1Password to her computer without paying an additional fee and 2) how I hook her up to my acct. I've read a lot about doing that and it really is beyond my comprehension. Thanks in advance. AND will something appear on my computer or email informing me you answered my questions? I have 1Password 4 on my computer. I tried to upgrade awhile back and lost all my passwords...

Is your 1PW from the Mac App Store or direct from the AgileBits web store? The question of payment does depend on which you have; it should be free in either case, but the procedure differs.

There is a "Notification Preferences" section in your profile on the forum that lets you adjust whether you get an email when there are answers.

    Hi @casser,

We will certainly help you sort all of this out but before we start it would seem prudent to learn a little more about what you're using and where.

Now a single licence, whether it is purchased directly from us at our AgileBits Store or if you purchased 1Password via Apple's Mac App Store will entitle you to run 1Password on as many Macs as you and five other immediate family members have. Now how you do so is dependent on where you purchased 1Password for Mac and that's why I want to clarify that aspect before we continue.

I've checked our records and I found that in the past you have purchased 1Password 3. What I couldn't find was a licence for 1Password 4. Now 1Password 4 was a paid upgrade over 1Password 3 and a new licence was required. There are a couple of reasons for not finding a 1Password 4/5 licence though.

    1. You have purchased 1Password for Mac at some point from the Mac App Store. Apple don't inform us of these purchases so we're not aware of our MAS customers until they approach us e.g. here in the forums.
    2. You might have purchased a 1Password 4/5 licence using a different email address. This would mean you have two records in our system that aren't linked.
    3. You might have been caught out by a bug in 1Password 4 where it didn't inform you that it was running in a trial mode. It's entirely our fault and we find most of our users don't mind paying for an upgrade but we really do have to let them know first.

All of this is important because what options are available to you do depend on a combination of what version you're licensed for and where it was purchased (sadly). Just to let you know, most of the options have Dropbox as their easiest route, meaning freeing up a small amount of space in Dropbox could be worthwhile.

So we know you're running Yosemite on both machines. Now we need to figure out what version of 1Password you're licensed for and possibly consider an upgrade (but you certainly are not forced to do so). We can help you install 1Password on both Macs and that's regardless of which version it ends up being and we can help you sync the two although that might mean moving a couple of items out of Dropbox. Hopefully that sounds like a plan

Thank you for your thorough reply. My problem is I have no idea how I went about upgrading to 1Password 4. Normally I would go directly through you, the source of the program.

When I first purchased it I was told I could use the same purchase on my computer and my wife's computer. Unfortunately her computer wasn't able to let me download the program. She finally bought a restored computer that would accept 1Password and now I have no idea how to share my acct with her.

Do you have any idea how I can find out where my 4 came from? I tried to visit my Mac app purchase history and all I can find are my iTune music purchases. I'm not want to sound snarly and I will probably suffer for saying this but as much as I love and appreciate your program, I will not buy it again since that was a main reason for my original purchase - so my wife could share.

Guess I'm pretty naive since I would think I must have purchased 4 from someone in order to have it on my computer and would see regardless of where I upgraded you would honor what was originally promised.

Ahhhh. I just managed to open my PURCHASES from Mac App Store. They go back to 2012 and there is no record of my ordering 1Password 4 or any 1Password program from them. So I must have ordered directly through you. My name is [edit: personal information removed to protect privacy] and my email address is [edit: removed; same email address associated with forum handle]. Hopefully that will help.

    Hi @casser,

Thanks for the follow-up. I've removed your personal information from your post, but before I did, I checked again in our records and was still unable to find any license for 1Password 4 or 5--just version 3. So I think you may be in situation #3 from littlebobbytables's post above, where a bug in our product accidentally allowed certain users to continue using version 4 for free indefinitely. You can check for sure by seeing if your 1Password 4 app is licensed.

You can also search your Gmail account for an email from AgileBits called "Your Receipt and License Information." If you find a license for version 4 or 5, you can forward that email to your wife and she can use it to license her copy.

If you find that you don't have a license for version 4/5 after all, you can continue to use 1Password 3, or you can use your 1Password 3 license key to get 50% off an upgrade license, which you can definitely share with your wife and apply to all your Macs.

I'd like to note that if you do go for an upgrade license (or find your license for version 4), you should both run 1Password 5. It uses the same license as version 4, it's specifically made for Yosemite, and it's got the latest and greatest features available.

Sorry for all the confusion here, but I hope one of these options steers you in the right direction! Once you get that sorted out, let us know which version of 1Password you end up running on each machine, and we can better advise you on how to sync your data across them. Cheers! :)

OK. Looks like the problem is me. :( I checked my "license" and it expired. So apparently I had free usage. I'll go ahead an upgrade to 5 and probably end up coming back to find out (in really clear directions) how I let my wife also share my account. Much appreciate your help.

    Hi @casser,

I'm glad you could get to the bottom of the license mystery.

Once you're both running 1Password 5 on your Macs, you'll have a few sync options, depending on your preference.

If you and your wife want to share a single primary vault (and thus Master Password), then your main options to sync between two Macs are Dropbox and iCloud. This is a good place to mention that if you want to use iCloud sync, that's currently only available in 1Password from the Mac App Store, which you'd need to purchase at full price because we're unable to give upgrade discounts in the App Store.

If you'd prefer to each have your own primary vault and then have a separate, shared vault, then Dropbox sync is the way to go.

There is no requirement that you have separate Dropbox accounts unless you want to have separate primary vaults. If you only have one vault and are sharing that one vault, you can just use the same Dropbox account.

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you need clarification on any of this or have any other questions. :)

This is great. Weird since my license say 1Password 5 but the thing in the box on top of my computer say 1Password 4. However, :-) I am synced on iCloud. Now can you talk to me like a 5 year old and take me through one step at a time on how to now add password to my wife's computer? Unless of course we have the option to speak via phone.

Ok back to my original question and hoping I can get a direct reply: I now have 1Password 4 and use MAC OS X Yosemite. I want to share my 1Password acct with my wife on her computer. Lots of info about copying files, etc. I LOVE 1Password and just need a very simple explanation on how to share. Thanks...

    Hi @casser,

Thanks for upgrading! And we're very glad to hear that you love 1Password! <3

Your new license is good for versions 3, 4, and 5, so I'd recommend you update to 1Password 5, the latest and greatest release for Mac, specifically designed and developed for Yosemite.

    1. From the menu bar in 1Password 4, select 1Password 4 > [press and hold Control] Quit 1Password and 1Password Mini.
    2. Drag the 1Password 4 app icon into the Trash (this will not affect your secure data, which is stored elsewhere on your computer)
    3. Download 1Password 5 from here: https://agilebits.com/onepassword/mac
    4. Once you have 1Password 5 installed, it should recognize your existing data and prompt you for your Master Password.

As I mentioned above, there are two ways to go about sharing your data with Dropbox sync.

Do you want to share one vault with your wife, so you both have access to everything? Or do you want to each have your own personal vault and a secondary shared vault?

Thanks but my Dropbox is full and if I need to copy or add anything to it - it won't accept. I thought I read this could be done with iCloud instead? I'm just concerned about being asked to "copy" anything...

GREAT. I did as instructed and quite 1Password. Now the icon is nowhere to be found in order to move to trash. You have no idea how frustrating it is to be as computer illiterate as I am and not be given simple instructions...

OK I managed to go to my FILE thing and drag 4 to the garbage and install 5. Now I'm discovering only if I bought through Mac can I use iCloud to share with my wife?
