Trial period

Bought a licence in 2012 - now find 1Password 5 is telling me Trial Period ended. I have never been informed that I was on a trial period, but understand from this forum that there is a paid upgrade somewhere along the route. Had I known, I would not have upgraded as there appears to be no new functionality. How do I get back to a fully functional, licensed copy of 1Password?

Now feeling very ripped off as I cannot edit any of my entries...

It would have been, at the very least, polite to inform me before upgrading that this was a paid upgrade.

What a way to treat your customers - lock them in to an upgrade and then three years later tell them they have to pay to get access to their own data - seems like ransomware to me...

You can return to version 3 if you want. It's downloadable from the legacy section towards the bottom of the downloads page.

I suspect that the issue of not being told is because version 3 is so old. That is, the upgrade from 3 to 4 was paid and you would have been warned. But the upgrade from 4 to 5 is free, so there's no need to warn people. Possibly the AgileBits people just failed to code for the very few people still on version 3.

1PW is not ransomware, as you can use existing passwords on an unpaid version, just can't add new ones or edit.

I upgraded fro 3 to 4 ages ago and then to 5 several months ago. This Trial period message has just started to appear so things are not as you have described. As to ransomware, I am in the position of not being able to edit my entries and have NEVER received any indication that there was a requirement to pay for the upgrade to version 5 - I think that counts as sharp business practice at the very least and probably does deserve the term Ransomware...

There was a bug in 4 that allowed people to continue using it even though it was not licensed. This was squashed in 5, which is why you are only just getting the message.

The reason I would not use the term ransomware is precisely because you can continue for ever using the passwords you have, you just can't add or edit passwords without paying.

As I pointed out, you can always revert to version 3. It has its limits in Yosemite, might not work in El Capitan (I have no idea), but is usable.

Were you never told that the upgrade from 3 to 4 was chargeable? I can't remember, and it might depend on how you made the upgrade. My guess is that you were told, but overlooked that information. And, because of the bug, you were able to continue without paying.

Your guess is wrong and quite frankly insulting. However this happened, this is not the way to treat customers...

Sorry if you found it insulting. You upgraded to 4 "ages ago", so you might well not have been able to remember. You would be surprised at the number of people who miss things that are clearly stated, so I don't feel my guess was unreasonable, even though it may be wrong.

Anyway, revert to 3 if you feel that strongly.

What is entirely clear from this exchange is that you are completely unconcerned that I have been left in this situation and that this has been caused by some problem with one of the versions that I have been using.

Your whole attitude is combative - "revert to 3 if you feel that strongly", does not address my issues and I would be grateful if you would pass this issue on to someone else.

    Hi @gn1,

I do apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding about your 1Password license! We certainly never intended to mislead you about that, although I can understand why it upset you to find out the version you've been using is a paid upgrade. I don't think I would be very happy about that either!

I noticed you also sent us a few emails about this, so in order to avoid confusion between here and there, I'll reply to your email once I post this reply here, and we'll keep the conversation going via email.

I wanted to briefly mention that danco is not a paid employee of AgileBits, but someone who volunteers his time to help other customers on our support forum. I've read his responses here, and I really don't think he meant any offense at all - he was just trying to be helpful. If you interpreted his messages as being insulting, I apologize for that. I'm positive it was unintentional!

You should get an email response from me shortly, thanks for your patience! :)

As you can see, this is now being dealt with by members of AgileBits's staff.

I was trying to help you get back to a situation you were happy with.

Given we're in contact with gn1 via email I'm going to close this thread.
