How do I share one password vault among two desktop and two laptop computers?

Can I share one vault among different computers (Mac and Pc) simply by putting the passwords file on a server and directing each computer to that file? Do I still need Dropbox?

I am running 5 on the Macs and 4 on the Windows. I have the latest updates on all computers. Windows 7 on one pc, Windows 8 on a laptop, Yosemite on the desktop and laptop computers.

    Hi @Connie Berglund,

Yes! You can customize a local sync solution for your Mac and Windows machines by using folder sync. This may require more legwork, though, so please read this guide carefully and be sure to back up your data first. Happy syncing! :)

Hi, same problem here with Windows and Mac.

The folder sync guide confirms that the Windows version doesn't support folder sync (yet?). I have solved this by using a vault on a network drive directly from Windows while synching to this vault from OS X (and synching over Wi-Fi from OS X to iOS).

The Windows and OS X computers are both desktop, so the network drive is (hopefully) always available.

Is that the recommended setup for this situation?

    Hi @OidaOukEidos,

Thanks for your questions! I'll do my best to help clear a few things up here:

The folder sync guide confirms that the Windows version doesn't support folder sync (yet?).

Well, not exactly. The Windows version just works differently than the Mac version. On a Mac, your 1Password vault is stored separately from your 1Password sync data. It reads your data from its own database, and syncs changes between that and the sync data. On Windows, your 1Password vault is the same thing as the sync data, so the 1Password program reads your data directly from the same data file that is used to sync.

Therefore the concept of "Folder sync" doesn't really apply to the Windows version - in fact, there aren't really any sync settings in 1Password for Windows at all, aside from an option to move the data file to the Dropbox folder (which is basically just for convenience, as it's the same thing as moving it to any other folder).

I have solved this by using a vault on a network drive directly from Windows while synching to this vault from OS X

We generally discourage doing it this way. On a Mac, if Folder sync is pointing directly to a file on a network drive, 1Password will get upset if it encounters latency or other network issues when it's trying to read/write to the sync file. To make a long story short, that would cause some error messages that would keep getting in the way of trying to use 1Password. As for Windows, it can be an even bigger problem, because 1Password reads directly from the sync data file. Therefore, if there's any problem connecting to the network drive, you won't have access to your 1Password data on Windows at all.

What we recommend is that you set up 1Password to point to a local folder on the computer, and then use another tool to copy the contents of that folder to/from the network drive. That way, 1Password will still work even if it can't access the network drive. We have a bit more information about this in our Folder sync knowledgebase article.

Hopefully this information is useful, but if you have questions about that, please let us know - we're always happy to help!
