Missing data

Having reformatted my hard disk, I downloaded 1Password and signed in only to discover that most of my records are missing. My data file is on Dropbox.

1Password Version: 1Password5
Extension Version: Chrome
OS Version: 10.10.3
Sync Type: Dropbox

    Hi @geets48,

I'm sorry you're having trouble syncing your 1Password data back again after reformatting! When setting up your Mac again, did you install the Dropbox app and allow all the files to completely download to your Mac from your Dropbox.com account?

Did you have your data in multiple vaults in 1Password, or was everything in your Primary vault? If you had multiple vaults, please keep in mind that each vault syncs separately. If you were syncing each vault with Dropbox, you'll need to re-add each .agilekeychain from your Dropbox folder to 1Password.

If you were only using one vault (i.e. Primary), please take a look in your Dropbox folder to see if there is more than one .agilekeychain bundle there. If there is, maybe you synced with an older one that didn't have all your data? 1Password for Mac allows you to create a .agilekeychain anywhere in your Dropbox folder, but in case it helps, here are the default locations that different versions of 1Password have used:

    ~/Dropbox/1Password.agilekeychain
    ~/Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain
    ~/Dropbox/Apps/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

Alternately, do you have a backup of your Mac from before you reformatted it? If so, that will likely have a backup of your 1Password data. In the backup of your Mac, you would want to look for the file path(s) listed under the "Backup" section in this knowledgebase article. You can copy the latest 1Password backup file to your Mac, then open the main 1Password app, go to File > Restore, click the Restore button and choose that backup file.

Does this help at all? Let us know how it all goes, and if you need more help, we'll continue from there. Thanks!

In Finder, I can see under Dropbox, two folders, 1Password.agilekeychain and Family.agilekeychain. The peculiar thing is that when I double-click on the Dropbox icon in my Dock nothing happens. How do I get all the data that exists in the Dropbox folders, 1Password.agilekeychain and Family.agilekeychain transferred to 1Password?

    Hi @geets48,

When you first started up 1Password on this fresh copy of OS X did it request your normal Master Password and could you see your primary vault like you could before? I suspect this is the case and that maybe you're just missing access to your secondary vault which you named Family. Is this accurate at all?

To add a secondary vault to 1Password simply double click on the .agilekeychain in question, so for you it would be Family.agilekeychain. 1Password will guide you through adding a secondary vault and I believe that will resolve the missing items.

Of course if it doesn't please do let us know and we'll do our best to resolve this.

    Problem sorted.

I went in to Dropbox/1Password and double clicked 1Password.agilekeychain. Entered my password when asked and hey presto my data was transferred.

Somehow I cannot recreate/transfer my Family Vault in the same way. I get the message "The file is already being synced with the Primary vault".

    Hi @geets48,

It sounds like your two vaults have been mixed up, leaving your primary as your secondary and your secondary as your primary. Unfortunately there isn't an easy solution except to start over. The reason is there is no way to swap two vaults or a way to delete a primary vault.

    1. Follow our How do I start over? guide.
    2. Launch 1Password and using our guide, Finding existing 1Password data during setup you will want to make sure 1Password is looking at your 1Password.agilekeychain and not your family vault one. How to do this? bypass the request for a Master Password and instead use the guide to allow you to pick a .agilekeychain. Now this shouldn't be needed, 1Password should pick the 1Password.agilekeychain but it didn't last time and I don't know why.
    3. With your 1Password.agilekeychain associated with your primary vault again you should then be able to add your family vault as a secondary vault by double clicking on it like you did before.

As you can see, it's all about 1Password getting confused over which .agilekeychain is your primary and which is really your secondary. I believe after you've reversed them everything will be as you expect it. If you have any questions though please do ask

I now have 2 vaults, Primary (this was created following the reformat of my hard disk) and 1Password. How do I delete the Primary vault as I managed to retrieve all my data in the 1Password vault?

    Hi @geets48,

There is only one way to remove the primary vault I'm afraid and that's to start over and it does mean restarting. The trick is when 1Password is first launched from a clean point it needs to be looking at your 1Password.agilekeychain as the existing data. That will put the correct items in your primary vault and then allow you to add your family .agilekeychain as a secondary vault.

If you find anything in my previous post or the links provided isn't clear enough or that if when following them something doesn't fit then please do let us know. Under normal conditions though 1Password will always pick a 1Password.agilekeychain over any other one found as that name is the default title used when you sync a primary vault.

Do I uninstall 1Password and then reinstall it? My data is saved under Dropbox under folders: 1Password.agilekeychain and Family.agilekeychain
