Feature Request: "Pin 1Password Mini to menu bar"

When I pull up 1Password mini with a keyboard shortcut and my browser is open, the mini window zips around the screen to where it thinks my my browser window is; sometimes it goes to the wrong display.

I would love it if it just showed up pinned to the menu bar every time. Then I know where to look, it won't be covering something else up, it won't take any time to move around and animate, overall just a more consistent experience.

    Hi @weskoop,

I'll do my best to try and explain some of the behaviour of menu location and see if we can find something that works for you.

Our multi-monitor support has been... complicated. At the moment though we have two behaviours that you can switch between once you know how.

The 1Password mini menu is actually moveable. There is a small drag bar and using this you can move the menu bar around. To best describe this please find a snapshot below with the bar roughly highlighted.

If you click and drag you should find you can move the menu wherever you like. Now if you move the menu close to the middle of the screen you should find it will snap into place. When it does that, that's one behaviour activated. This behaviour tries to understand what display is being actively used, maybe even where your browser is but I can't remember if that's in a beta or not. This behaviour has been fraught with quirks.

If you drag the menu somewhere else though, it should always open in that location and for somebody like yourself with a multi-monitor setup it should also always be that monitor regardless of which one is active at the moment. So you might find that moving the menu to a specific location allows you to achieve what you're looking for.

To give you an idea, I don't actually keep the 1Password icon in my menu bar as I'm always using the keyboard shortcuts myself and it's one less icon in an ever expanding bar. I dragged my 1Password mini menu up into the top right hand corner and whenever I use ⌥⌘\ it always opens up there. Now I only have a single monitor setup though but I believe it should do the same for you.

Could that be a potential solution for you that works right now?

That Kinda works once, the position on the screen doesn't match because the resolutions are different and it starts attached (like i was suggesting) then moves about an inch, then moved back about 1/2 an inch. after toggling monitors for a bit (ie working) the windows just kinda wants to zoom around the screen again. It's really broken. I managed to record a couple of screencasts.

    Notes —
I only invoked the 1p mini window with the keyboard shortcut, I recorded screen clicks. When the menubar goes dim, I switched screens, then invoked it again in chrome on the other screen. Note that I only ever repositioned the window 1 time at the beginning of video 2, after that it ended up in 4 different places just on the one monitor all by itself

have a look, having 1p mini behave like it does when you click the menu bar icon seems like logical functionality. even if the drag functionality worked, it was very hard to find the dragzone.

    Hi @weskoop,

Can you try something for me please. Can you enter 1Password's preferences and in the General tab uncheck the second checkbox, the one titled Show mini app icon in the menu bar. It won't stop 1Password mini running, it merely removes the icon from the menu bar.

Does the twitchy behaviour you've observed alter at all?

I hid the icon, and yes, that does stop the window from being twitchy. Since it's pinned to a certain location now, when I'm on my 2nd monitor, it still shows up on the first screen in the location i pinned it - It makes sense in the context of how it works now.

Maybe if the Show Menu Bar Item is on, and it were to just be a menu bar pull down, then it would be in the same spot on which ever the active screen is, which is ideal behaviour for a menu bar app. Maybe it should revert to old behaviour only if the menu bar is hidden.

Thanks for the work around, very helpful.

I'm glad the workaround was helpful! As littlebobbytables mentioned, there are some odd quirks in the behavior of how 1Password mini positions itself under certain circumstances. I'm sorry for the inconvenience! Our developers are definitely working to improve that, so hopefully it should work more consistently and/or the way you expect it to in future versions.

If you have more questions or need anything else, be sure to let us know - we're always happy to help. :)
