Does 1Password use the Apple Clipboard?
When I Copy and Paste from 1Password, does this use my Mac Clipboard? Does 1Password Mini use the Mac Clipboard to communicate with the Browser Extension? If I log in directly from the 1Password App, does this involve the Mac Clipboard? Does it make any difference if I purchased 1Password directly rather than from the App Store, or do they both use the Mac Clipboard?

Hi @kohls,
Thanks for taking the time to contact us!
When I Copy and Paste from 1Password, does this use my Mac Clipboard?
Yes.
Does 1Password Mini use the Mac Clipboard to communicate with the Browser Extension?
No. 1Password Mini communicates with the browser extension using a local WebSocket connection.
If I log in directly from the 1Password App, does this involve the Mac Clipboard?
No, if you let 1Password auto-fill the login for you the clipboard is not used.
Does it make any difference if I purchased 1Password directly rather than from the App Store, or do they both use the Mac Clipboard?
No difference.
I hope that helps, but please let us know if you have any more questions or would like some more details. :)

Thank you. Another question: If I let the 1Password app auto-fill logins, does this pass through the Mini?

Hi @kohls,
Basically everything passes through 1Password mini, it's the hub for everything 1Password related. When you click on a URL in the main 1Password window, 1Password mini passes the URL (with a
onepasswd
parameter added to it) to OS X and asks OS X to take care of it. OS X passes the URL to the default application for the HTTP(S) protocol. When the browser first loads the URL our Browser Extension notices theonepasswd
parameter, notes the UUID and removes the parameter before allowing the browser to proceed in loading the page. Once the page is loaded, the extension communicates with 1Password mini to fill the page using the supplied UUID to identify the correct Login item. This last part is no different to if you had previously loaded the page yourself and then used⌘\
to attempt to fill.Does that help answer your question at all?

Note that in the Security section of Preferences, you can decide to clear clipboard contents after a chosen period of time. However this may not work with third-party clipboard managers, though they may well have a related option.

Thanks for mentioning that @danco! I often forget about that option in the 1Password preferences for Mac, but it's definitely one to keep in mind if you have concerns about using the Mac clipboard.
@kohls, if you open the main 1Password app, you can find that setting by going to 1Password > Preferences, then selecting the Security tab.

Thanks. I have it set to 10 seconds, but in reality, it takes much longer. When I choose Show Clipboard from the Finder Edit Menu after only 10 seconds, whatever I copy and paste is still there.

Hi @kohls,
Did you change that setting to 10 seconds from something else? If so, you might be running into a small bug where changes to that setting may not be saved correctly. The following steps should help to make sure the change is saved:
- In 1Password, go to Preferences > Security.
- Change the number in the "Change clipboard contents after _____ seconds" setting.
- Press the Tab or Return/Enter key on your keyboard. (This is the important step to make sure that setting is saved!)
Once you do that, click on a username or password field in one of your Login items, then wait until the clipboard should be cleared. Now try pasting that somewhere. What happens?
