Sort of resetting 1P

Hi all,

I had a security incident where there was a possibility my single 1P passphrase was at least partially compromised. Rather than risk the possibility that someone could guess my mind and have a several-orders-of-magnitude head start cracking it, I changed it. I managed somehow to use a slightly different variant on the desktop than I did on iOS—completely unintentional. By breaking the link between Dropbox and the iOS app, I was able to preserve my vault and even reset its password a second time to something I know to be unambiguous. Remove all traces of the old keychain from dropbox and suddenly I can place the new keychain into Dropbox using the iOS passphrase. So far so good. Two iOS devices now recognize this keychain as correct, though I had to trash 1P on the other iOS device.

Now there's the Mac (and Windows, but one step at a time…) It still has the bad vault and I need to go back to new user mode. But in ~/Library there are several files related to iOS, and not just in MobileDocuments… I figure I'd best delete with care. What do I nuke to reset 1P to fundamentally new user mode without hosing my now fixed iOS vault? If I can keep my prefs, cool. If not, manageable.

Bonus question: For anyone else who does this, was there a better way to fix it than I did?

    Oh, I should've named versions, sorry. OS X 10.3.0 (I know, I need to update), 1Password 5
    Version 5.4.BETA-17 (540017).

    Hi @tjcarter,

Sounds like you did the right thing by changing your master password! If I understand, you changed it on both your iOS device(s) and you Mac, but changed it to something slightly different on the Mac. Now, as long as you remembered the new one you set on your Mac, it really shouldn't cause any harm - the worst that could happen is that your other devices would end up with that same master password, and in that case you could go back and change it again. But there's nothing wrong with what you did (disabling Dropbox sync and deleting the .agilekeychain from Dropbox), it just means a few extra steps on your end.

If you'd like to reset 1Password on your Mac and re-sync your data from Dropbox, you can follow the steps in this knowledgebase article. After that, when you open the 1Password app on your Mac, you'll go through the setup again, and you will be able to sync your data from Dropbox. It should be the new .agilekeychain you created when you re-enabled sync on iOS, so it should require the new master password.

On Windows, this will all be very simple, because the Windows version of 1Password reads directly from the .agilekeychain, which in your case is in the Dropbox folder. All you need to do is open the new copy of that .agilekeychain in 1Password for Windows and enter the new master password.

Hopefully this helps, but if you have more questions or need anything else, just let us know! :)

Thanks, upon removing those files 1P detected my vault in Dropbox immediately—all is right with the world again. ;)
