Merge & Sync not working w/ dropbox

I have a work Vault that I am synced to through dropbox. I don't know when it stopped syncing, this was the first vault I was synced to with 1pass and didn't recognize that the sync had been broken.

I realized the sync was broken a few days ago, went in to re-establish the connection and when I do it now says:
1Password found existing data in Dropbox. It will be merged with your current vault.

When I click "merge with existing" I get a request for a new password:
"1Password detected that the data in the ***** vault is different from the data you selected in Dropbox.
Please review the information below before deciding to merge."
then it lists the 2 vaults but on the second it requests a vault password.

I have tried both the password given to me by our system administrator and my master password for 1password and neither of them work. When I click "Unlock and Merge" it simply acts as though the password is incorrect.

I don't know what vault this is requesting the password for as I've put in the only two passwords it would be requesting and that has not worked.

I have attached a screenshot combining both 1password messages.!

What am I doing wrong, or why is this not working?
Thanks

    Hi @netparadigms,

I'm sorry you're having trouble re-enabling Dropbox sync! The "Merge with Dropbox vault" window is asking for your master password for that 1Password vault in Dropbox. Is the "Password Hint" the same for both vaults in that message? If so, and if it's your Primary vault, then it should be asking for the same master password you normally enter to unlock 1Password. Or have you changed your master password at all recently? If so, the vault in Dropbox could still be asking for the previous master password, depending on when Dropbox sync became disabled.

On the other hand, if that vault is a secondary vault on one of your Macs, keep in mind that each vault in 1Password has its own master password, even though unlocking the Primary vault with the Primary master password automatically unlocks your other vaults. You'll need to enter the master password for that specific vault.

Does that help at all? If not, please let us know and we'll continue from there. Thanks!

Hi @Drew_AG - Thank you for the quick response. I'll try and explain the answers to your questions here:

The vault I am trying to sync / merge here is NOT the primary vault.
The vault I am trying to sync / merge has NOT had the password for that vault changed.
The "Password Hint" is NOT showing as the same for both, it is showing a different hint.

Our admin set this vault up as their secondary vault and has not been able to figure out how to change the password for that secondary vault. Is that possible? I read a thread that ended at December 2013 that stated it was not a feature at that time (only able to change primary vault PW) but that it was scheduled for being added to a new release...

I have tried inputting both the password for my primary vault AND the password for the sync'd vault. Neither have worked.

    Hi @netparadigms,

Thanks for the additional information! So it sounds like the vault in question was created as a secondary vault by your admin on their computer. It also sounds like you used to sync that to a secondary vault in 1Password on your own Mac (and that your Primary vault is for your personal data, or perhaps a different work vault). If I'm mistaken about any of that, please let me know.

In the "merge" dialog, if the password hint is different for the vault in 1Password than it is for the vault in Dropbox, that should normally mean one of two things - either you're trying to merge two completely different vaults together (not usually recommended) or the master password for that vault has been changed since the last time it synced on your Mac. But since it sounds like this is a secondary vault on each computer it syncs with, it shouldn't be possible to change its master password (more on that in a bit). Are you trying to merge that vault in Dropbox with your Primary vault in the 1Password app? I'm assuming that's not what you want to do.

To make sure you're trying to merge it with the correct vault in the 1Password app:

    • Open 1Password and go to the menu option for 1Password > Preferences.
    • Choose the Sync tab.
    • On the left side of the sync preferences, select the secondary vault that was previously syncing with your admin's secondary vault in Dropbox.
    • Now choose Dropbox from the "sync vault with" drop-down menu, and select the corresponding vault from the shared Dropbox folder.

When you get to the "merge" dialog, do the hints match? Does it accept the master password for that secondary vault in Dropbox?

Now, about changing the master password for a secondary vault: There's no option to do that in the current release version of 1Password 5 for Mac, but our developers have added that to a recent beta version. That should hopefully make it into the next stable release/update, but I don't have a timeframe for when to expect that. In the meantime, there are a couple options for changing the master password of a secondary vault:

A workaround would be to create a new secondary vault in 1Password, with a new master password. Then copy all the items from the old secondary vault to the new secondary vault (and then delete the old secondary vault). Your admin who created that vault would probably want to do that themselves on their computer, sync the new vault with Dropbox, and let you know so you can add that as a new secondary vault on your own Mac. But if there are other people/computers also syncing with that (original) secondary vault, that could cause be a bit of extra work to get everyone to do that.

Alternately, you (or your admin) could install the beta version that has the option to change a secondary vault's master password, and do it that way. If you're using the AgileBits Store version of 1Password for Mac, installing the beta is easy. If you're using the Mac App Store version, there's a few more steps involved, and we can help to explain how to do that.

Please let us know how it all goes and how you want to proceed, thanks!
