1Password Mini: Recent used items list

I use 1Password for passwords for all kinds of things, not just websites. This means I'm often not just using Cmd-\ that longs me into a website, but I also frequently use Cmd-Opt-\ which brings up 1Password Mini globally.

One challenge in the case of things outside of the browser is the lack of auto-fill. While it's probably a big task to make auto-fill work across all kinds of 3rd-party applications, a feature that would make it much easier to use is a "Recently used item" or "Last used item" spot.

Usecase follows so you can see where the optimization would occur. I personally use keyboard for each step, but it's comparable if you are a mouse user.

  1. Enter app that requires me to enter some kind of log in. Reach log-in screen.
  2. Open 1Password Mini
  3. Start typing to search for the appropriate log in
  4. Select the appropriate log in from the search results
  5. Expand that log in to highlight the "username" field and copy it.
  6. Paste back into username field of app. Go to Password field.
  7. Open 1Password Mini
  8. Start typing to search for the appropriate log in
  9. Select the appropriate log in from the search results
  10. Expand that log in to highlight the "password" field and copy it
  11. Paste back into password field of app. Done

Here, the steps 8-9 could be alleviated by just having a list of the last 1 or 2 logins I interacted with. It is more mental energy to do it every time over forming a habit of going straight to the last used item.

Just a thought, thanks as always for your wonderful product!

Cheers,
-Chuck

    Hi @chucksense,

Thanks so much for taking the time to let us know your suggestion and feedback about using 1Password with other Mac apps!

1Password integrates with web browsers via the 1Password browser extension, which allows it to get the information needed to fill your data in a web form. Other (non-browser) apps don't have extensions like web browsers do, so 1Password can't integrate with them in order to fill your info for you.

However, it should be possible for 1Password mini to detect the current app and suggest a matching Login item, which would make it easier for you to copy & paste your info. We have an open feature request to add that ability to 1Password, although I don't have a timeframe for that. I think it would be a great feature, so hopefully we'll be able to include that in a future release!

For now, I have a couple suggestions that should make this process a little easier for you:

To find an item faster in 1Password mini, you can mark it as a favorite. The Favorites submenu is near the top of 1Password mini, so it might be easier to find a Login item there, instead of using the Search field.

Also, when viewing an item in 1Password mini, you can click the anchor button (or use the ⌘O keyboard shortcut) to open the item details in a separate window that floats on top of all your other windows. This makes it really easy to copy & paste multiple fields without needing to reopen 1Password mini and search for the same item again. The item details will be available until you click the red close button in the upper left corner of the window.

Hopefully that helps, but please let us know if you need anything else. Thanks!
