Firefox add-on needs to be re-installed every time Firefox restarts

Every time I quit Firefox, upon restart the add-on will be missing. In order to get it working again, I have to uninstall the add-on completely, quit Firefox, and then re-install the add on.

I've observed this behavior for several months now. I'm running Firefox 38.0.5 on OS X Yosemite version 10.10.4. 1Password version 5.3.2

    Hi @NateSlate,

I'm sorry you're having trouble with the 1Password extension in Firefox!

You said the extension is missing when you start Firefox, but that you fix it by uninstalling (and reinstalling) the extension. If the extension is actually missing, it shouldn't be there in order to uninstall it. To make sure I understand, do you mean the 1Password extension is missing from the Firefox toolbar, but appears in Firefox's list of add-ons (in Tools > Add-ons)?

If it's still installed but not appearing in the toolbar, please try this the next time it happens:

    • In Firefox, click on the three-bar icon at the far right end of the tool bar.
    • In the panel that appears, click the "+ Customize" button in the lower left corner.
    • If 1Password appears under "Additional Tools and Features", drag it up to the toolbar.
    • Click the Exit Customize button at the bottom of the customization panel.

If that doesn't stop the problem, or if the 1Password extension isn't listed under "Additional Tools and Features", please go to Tools > Add-ons and find the 1Password extension there. Does it show "(disabled)"? If so, click the Enable button. If it's already enabled, what is the exact version of the 1Password extension?

    Thanks!

You are correct in that the add-on does show up as installed and enabled even though the icon is not displayed in the toolbar.

Unfortunately, when I bring up the "Customize" window in Firefox, I'll that is displayed is a blank page in the browser. There is no option to add additional tools and features.

So far, the only way I've been able to restore the button to the toolbar is by uninstalling the add-on, quitting firefox, reinstalling.

That does suggest to me that there is a problem with your Firefox profile. It may be worth setting up a new profile to see if that solves the problem.

    Hi @NateSlate,

You can try creating a new profile without harming your original. This will allow you to test the theory that your Firefox profile is possibly a bit broken. To create a test profile this page, Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles should help.

If it does turn out to be your profile one thing you might try is removing the xulstore.json and have Firefox create a new one. That file is the one that relates to

    toolbar and window size/position settings.

at least according to Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data anyway. Given you're saying it's just the icon that seems to be at fault this seems like a potential cause.

    Please keep us updated

Thanks for the tip. I actually figured out a workaround. I disabled all the add-ons and re-enabled them one-by-one. For some reason, a couple of add-ons were causing problems, but 1Password was not one of them. I just disabled the problematic add-ons, as they aren't ones I need running at all times.

If you feel able to do so, it might be helpful to mention here what the problematic add-ons were. That could help others in the future.

@NateSlate: Ah, thanks for the update! Indeed, if you don't mind sharing, we'd love to know which addons were causing trouble with you — or simply the ones you were using, if you weren't able to narrow down precisely which was the culprit — so that we can test it ourselves and add the information to the knowledgebase where appropriate. Cheers! :)
