Upgrading 1Password from v3 bought from web site to v5.3 from Apple Store - no upgrade discount.

I have been using 1Password v3 for several years. I would like to upgrade to a new version. I used AgileBits web site to determine what new version was available. It showed that I could upgrade for a reduced fee, but said that for Cloud synching I had to buy the new version from the Apple Store. The Apple Store does not offer me an upgrade, only full price. I did not buy v3 from the Apple Store.

Can I upgrade for a reduced fee and buy the version with Cloud Syncing?

1Password Version: V3 to V5.3
Extension Version: 4.4.0
OS Version: OS X 10.9.5
Sync Type: Cloud

    Hi @unogato,

Unfortunately, Apple does not give us (or any developer) the ability to do upgrade pricing on the Mac App Store, so we don't have any way to give individual discounts there. Because of that, we're only able to offer our upgrade discount on the AgileBits Store. If you wanted to purchase 1Password from the Mac App Store, you would need to buy it at the full price shown there. We do occasionally have promotions, although we don't announce them ahead of time.

Now, I searched our system for the email address associated with your forum account, and I see that you already purchased an upgrade to 1Password 5 for Mac from the AgileBits Store back in February. (I resent your license info to your email so you have a copy of that.) So you don't need to make another purchase for that, you can simply use the web store license for 1Password 5 that you already bought. The only difference is that it can't sync via iCloud.

Have you considered using Dropbox sync? Dropbox is an excellent choice, and many of us here at AgileBits use it. Your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted, so with regard to security there is not a difference between syncing 1Password data with Dropbox or iCloud. 1Password simply doesn't depend on the security of either to protect your data.

Dropbox also has the advantage that it can be used to share vaults with friends, family, and co-workers. It is not possible to share anything between iCloud accounts.

Hopefully that answers your questions, but please let us know if you need anything else. :)

Unfortunately not. Currently Apple just does not allow discounts on their App Store, it has to be the same priced for everybody.

THat's one of the advantages of a direct purchase; AgileBits can offer discounts on their own store.

It's also because of Apple's policies that iCloud sync is not available in the direct version.

Some people insist on iCloud sync, and they are perfectly entitled to do so if that's their preference. But Dropbox sync works with all versions, has some technical advantages, and is used by many people including AgileBits staff.

    Hi @unogato,

It looks like you've got a couple of pretty comprehensive answers there. If you have any follow up questions do please ask
