Trouble sharing a vault

Two macbook pro's, both with OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.4 trying to share a vault. Question, when I assign the same password I'm using for the my primary to the new vault I can't get the Create New Vault Box to accept that password. Do I have to use a different password for the new vault?

    Hi @kismet52,

To make sure I understand, are you having trouble sharing a vault with someone else (via Dropbox folder sharing)? Or, are you having trouble creating a secondary vault in 1Password on your Mac? It sounds like the problem might be with choosing a master password when creating a secondary vault, but you mentioned "sharing" a couple times, so I wanted to double-check that.

If you're getting stuck trying to create a new, secondary vault in 1Password, first please make sure you're following the steps here: Create a new vault

When you choose the option to create a new vault, you'll need to give it a name, and then choose a master password (and then type that same, new master password again to confirm). Is that where you're getting stuck? Technically, there should be no problem with choosing the same master password as your Primary vault, so there's no reason it shouldn't accept it as long as you're typing the exact same one in both fields.

However, you shouldn't use the same master password for both vaults - the idea is that each vault should have its own master password. This is especially true if you plan to share that secondary vault with someone else, because you won't want them to know the master password for your Primary vault.

Hopefully this helps, but if I misunderstood or you're still having trouble, just let us know! :)

Thanks for responding. Yes I'm trying to share a vault with my wife via dropbox. I can create the vault, but when I go on her mac to initiate sharing, the box won't accept the password. I've tried twice and both times it won't accept the password. I'll keep trying, I must be missing a step. The first time I used my same primary master password, second time I used a different one. Same results wouldn't get past the "Create New Vault box. I'll try again and let you know. Where you create a file to share in dropbox is confusing to me. I think I muddled through it, but the steps aren't clear, although I do get to the green check point on both macs.

    Hi @kismet52,

Thanks for clarifying, I think I understand what you mean now: You already created a secondary vault on your Mac that you'd like to share with your wife. You're just having some trouble getting that vault set up in 1Password on your wife's Mac, because it won't accept the master password you chose for that vault.

If that's the problem, then the first thing to do is make sure you've set up Dropbox syncing & sharing for that vault by following the steps in this knowledgebase article. I'm not sure if those are the steps you have been trying, but if you have any questions about those steps, please let us know. Essentially, the steps should help you to set up Dropbox sync for the secondary vault, set up Dropbox folder sharing to share that vault's .agilekeychain with your wife, and then add that .agilekeychain to 1Password on her Mac as a new vault.

If you have shared that vault via Dropbox, and that .agilekeychain has downloaded to the Dropbox folder on your wife's Mac, you should be able to simply double-click that .agilekeychain, then choose a vault name and enter its master password when prompted. Is that where you're running into a problem with the master password?
