Hi
I have friends coming later thinking about punching 1Password for their Mac and would like to know how to put saved passwords and Logins from sites they already have into 1Password?

    Can you tell us how those people have their password stored now? 1Password has some built in conversion tools for some othe password managers. And @MrC has developed a really useful set of tools for others. You'll find that it's possible to convert well structured CSV files too. Otherwise, it's likely to be a manual process.

    @George,

    Adding to what Hawkmoth said, if your friends are trying to import their passwords from various browsers, this can be done. The method differs depending on browser. The converter linked to in the previous post guides you through importing from the OS X Keychain (where Safari stores its passwords), and this link explains how to deal with Firefox.

    Please let us know what your needs are so that we can help you more.

    P.S. we hope you mean purchasing 1Password, and not punching 1Password!

    @George,

    Ok, great. Perhaps you'll want to push your friends to let 1Password help them use unique passwords, since Friends don’t let friends reuse passwords.

    Hi yes I just want to let them use their passwords they have and then show how to change by going to the web sites and doing it there.

    @George - I changed the title of your post to be more informative about your issue. That will help others who follow to use the discussion for their own purposes. I hope you don't mind.

    Hi @George ,

    First of all, I want to thank you so much for being a 1Password ambassador, but more importantly, for thinking about your friends' security. That's pretty great!

    For getting new people excited about 1Password, I usually start by showing off the browser extension. Because that's the feature that's really going to save them time and effort. Our User Guide article on Saving a Login can walk you through the process of saving existing data into 1Password, and the Changing a saved password article demonstrates how to up your security by changing already saved passwords. Once they see how easy it is to log into websites with the ⌘\ ( Command- \ ) keyboard shortcut, hopefully they'll be hooked!

    If you (or they) have any other questions, we're here to help! :)

    Hi
    maybe Im a bit thick but when I opened Safari 1password didn't ask - If you open your browser before installing the extension, 1Password will prompt you to install it. Click the Get It Now button to begin

    You mentioned OS X 10.7.5 as the operating system in one of the machines. The most recent version of 1Password that will run on that is 3.8.22. You can download that in the legacy section of the Downloads page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to get that. You won't be able to get it from the Mac App Store.

    Hi the OSX10.7.5 is on the Macbook Pro. also I seem to remember that when I first got 1password I had to go to my browser and get the extension, but what do I do with an iPad?

    If the iPad is running on iOS 8, and it has version 5 of 1Password, the extension is built in to the application. If it's on an an earlier iOS version, it won't be running 1Password 5, and there isn't an extension. That was a devopment that came with 1Password 5. Earlier versions relied on a built in browser for automatically submitting credentials.

    Here is an iOS Extension FAQ that should be helpful.

    Regarding the trial version, if you downloaded from AgileBits, and not the Apple Mac App Store, you have a trial version until you buy and apply a license. The trial is good for 30 days and is fully featured. I would think that your friends should use the trial period fully to decide if it is what they need.

    There are no trial versions for the iOS version, but 1Password 5 is free to download and use in its basic form. There are more advanced Pro features that can be activated through an in-app purchase. Again, I'd suggest using the basic version for awhile before decide whether your friends want or need the Pro features.

    Hi @George,

    It looks like you've already received some great answers from the others here, I hope it helped with your questions! To give you a couple more answers to questions you might end up asking:

    If your friend who has Mac OS X 10.7.5 decides to buy a license for 1Password 3 for Mac, they'll need to buy a license for 1Password 5 for Mac (from the AgileBits Store). That comes with a free license code for 1Password 3, which they'll receive in their license email.

    To install the 1Password extension in a web browser on a Mac, open the 1Password app and go to the menu for 1Password > Install Browser Extensions. Follow the steps on the website that opens to install the extension. For some more detailed instructions and screenshots, please take a look at this knowledgebase article: Installing the 1Password Web Browser Extension

    I hope that helps. We're here for you if you need anything else! :)
