How to divide vault because of divorce?
Hello,
unfortunately my wife and I will separate. So far we used one vault on 2 Macs, 2 iPhones and 2 iPads, synced through 1 iCloud sync.
Now everyone of us will stay with one device of each kind. Also a lot of the passwords should stay as they are but sensitive one will be separate in the future and of course personal and confidential.
What would be the best way to divide the vault somehow and in future have 2 separate vaults in 2 separate environments?
1Password Version: actual version
Extension Version: actual version
OS Version: actual Yosemite
Sync Type: icloud

@MarkusGermany I have moved your post from the Knowledgebase Feedback forum to the 1P for Mac forum and merged it with your existing thread there. It's better not to post about the same thing in two places because that not only makes support more difficult it also makes it harder for you to find the answer to your questions.

Thank you! I made the first post by mistake in the wrong section...

Hi @MarkusGermany,
First off, I'm sorry to read about why you've had to contact us for support. I've replied to one query like this before and like then it's sad but we shall do what we can to assist.
Now, as the goal is to move to having a personal vault each and a shared vault the first thing to be aware of is iCloud is not where you will want to store the vault. iCloud is limited to sharing a single primary vault between multiple Apple devices and this is pretty much what you don't want to be doing now. Here is what I would recommend.
- Visit https://www.dropbox.com and create two Dropbox accounts, one for you and one for your wife.
- Create a
1Password
folder in each account and then in the first Dropbox account create a new folder and title it something likeShared
. Using this guide, How do I share a file or folder with others? share theShared
folder between the two accounts so that both accounts look the same i.e. both have the same folder structure/1Password/Shared/
(as seen from Dropbox). Anything placed into theShared
folder from either account will now be visible to the other. - Set up Dropbox on the two Macs to start with so each uses their own account.
- On one of your Macs you will want to switch from iCloud Sync to Dropbox by entering 1Password's preferences and switching to the Sync tab. In there change the menu option from iCloud to Dropbox. You will be asked if you wish to confirm that you wish to Disable Sync and then asked to choose a location for Dropbox Sync. Choose your new
Shared
folder. For more details on Dropbox Sync this guide, Sync with Dropbox should help. - Give Dropbox a moment to synchronise all of the changes.
- Still on this Mac you will want to follow out How do I start over with an empty vault? guide.
- When you start up 1Password again you will be asked if you are a new user or an existing user. You want to select that you are a new user and follow the steps to create a new personal vault for whoever owns this Mac. This will be this person's new Master Password, the only only known to them.
- Add a single item to the new personal vault and set up Dropbox Sync for this new personal vault and use the
~/Dropbox/1Password/
folder. This will make this vault accessible to any device connecting to only this Dropbox account (so not shared like theShared
folder). - To re-add your shared vault simply double click on the vault inside the
Shared
folder.
What we've done in these nine steps is shift from a primary, iCloud shared vault to a personal vault stored in Dropbox along with a secondary vault that is shared. Let's say this was your Mac, for your iOS devices you would follow the How do I start over with an empty vault? guide for iOS and then our Existing 1Password user guide for iOS to first add the primary vault and then Settings: Vaults has information on adding a secondary vault.
On the other Mac it's a little easier. You would start at step 6. from above and follow those steps again.
At the end, the idea is you each have a single Dropbox account that holds your own personal vault. That personal vault is synchronised between your own set of devices. You will both have access to the shared vault which at the moment contains everything.
At this point you would probably want to use the menu option Help > Troubleshooting > Reset iCloud Data. This will purge the now redundant iCloud Data from your shared Apple ID (but just for the 1Password application).
Shared vault management. This is easiest from one of your Macs. In the Item List you can right click on an item and find a Share sub menu. The same options are available if you click on the share icon in the Item Details pane too. This will allow you to copy or move an item from the shared vault to your primary. This will allow you to move the items out that now no longer need to be shared whilst still keeping everything else shared.
You may have several questions before proceeding with any of this. Please do take the time to read everything carefully and if you have any questions do ask before proceeding.

I just wish we'd better under better circumstances @MarkusGermany. Should you have any questions you know where we are.

Dear all,
I would like to bring up this topic again because I have a question:
We now have two iMacs with 1Password installed on both. The vaults are synchronized by a shared folder in Dropbox.
To have a simple and fast break between the two macs, can I just turn of the shared folder so every computer is working "on its own" with a 1:1 copy of the vault?
Then each party can modify the passwords they want to have unique and that's it...?
Please comment.

Hi @MarkusGermany,
1Password 5 for Mac stores your data locally on the computer, so after you both disable Dropbox sync from the Sync tab of the Preferences pane, it's safe to just delete the 1Password.agilekeychain file in Dropbox. Then you can each reconfigure sync to your own separate Dropbox accounts or however you see fit.
