I have a question about how to license 1Password 5

Currently, I have a license for 1Password 3, which I make use of on a OS X 10.7.5 iMac. I just added an OS X 10.10 laptop on to which I want to install 1Password 5. I am not sure how to proceed. Upgrade my license or purchase a new license? If I upgrade my existing license, will it still be valid for my 1Password 3 installation?

    Hi @AndrewStrand,

Thanks for posting your thoughtful question here, and congrats on the new computer! I'll be happy to clarify our license policy for you.

When we talk about an upgrade license, we really mean a new license for which we've given previous-version users a discount. So, because you have a license for version 3, you can buy a license for version 5 for half price from our upgrade store. The 1Password 5 license you buy there can be considered both a new license and an upgrade license.

Every 1Password 5 for Mac license (which is a file, rather than a key) comes with a new license key for 1Password 3 as well, but your existing 1Password 3 license will never expire, either, and you can continue using it as usual. (You can actually use it for 1Password 3 on your new computer if you'd like, but if upgrading is an option for you, we think you'll really like 1Password 5.)

One more thing I'd like to note: 1Password 5 is also available for purchase in the Mac App Store, which is where you'll need to buy it if you're interested in syncing via iCloud. However, because we don't own or run that store, we are unable to offer upgrade discounts or coupons there, so you'd full price for that version. The version of 1Password 5 available on our website can sync via Dropbox, wifi, and local folder sync.

I hope this answers your questions, but I'll be happy to clarify further if needed. Thanks for using 1Password on both your Macs!
