Mac OS X Yosemite
Dropbox syncing - Dropbox is up to date
Local changes are syncing in 1Password5
AgileKeychain is in the dropbox folder but secondary vault is not syncing

I had to relink it last time to get the new logins but don't want to have to do that every time.

1Password Version: 5.3.2
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
Sync Type: Dropbox

I have a client who has shared her agilekeychain with me - it works fine upon first set up but when she adds new logins, they don't get added even though it shows that syncing occurs regularly.

    Please help!

    Hi @uncommonsense,

I'm sorry you're having some trouble syncing changes to that vault! Your first message had your versions of OS X and 1Password 5, but you didn't mention anything about your client's setup. Is she also using a Mac? If so, does she have the same version of Mac OS X and 1Password 5? That might make a difference as far as giving you the correct troubleshooting steps, so it will really help if you can find out and let us know.

The first thing to do is check some sync settings, so if she's also using 1Password 5 on a Mac, you can follow these same steps on both Macs:

    • Open the main 1Password app and go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences.
    • Click the Sync tab.
    • On the left side of the Sync prefs, select the vault that isn't syncing correctly.
    • For that vault, is Dropbox selected in the "Sync vault with" drop-down menu?
    • If Dropbox is selected, check the file path for the .agilekeychain file.

If either Mac shows that Dropbox sync is not currently enabled for that vault, that's the problem - and the solution would be to re-enable Dropbox sync. On the other hand, if one is syncing with a different keychain file than the other, you'll need to disable the sync, then set it up again and choose the correct keychain file.

Let us know how it goes and what you find, and we'll continue from there. Thanks!

I did this the first time, all worked fine but then didn't sync regularly. So I unlinked, deleted everything and linked up again - then got the newest logins so that was great but then doesn't update regularly.

Attached screenshot of sync area which now says 132 minutes ago - not sure how often that's supposed to go but before it was like 30 seconds or 3 minutes.

    Thanks so much!!!!

    Hi @uncommonsense,

Thank you for the details & screenshot, it's very helpful! :)

Have you asked your client to check those same sync settings in 1Password on her Mac? No rush of course, but once you hear back from her about that, just let us know.

    Thanks @uncommonsense!

So, in your screenshot of the sync preferences on your Mac, the shared .agilekeychain is in your main Dropbox folder, which implies that your client shared just that keychain, instead of a folder containing that keychain. Although that may not sound like a problem, the .agilekeychain "file" is actually a package / bundle - or basically a special type of folder on Mac OS X. Unfortunately, bundle files like that do not work well when directly shared via Dropbox, and that's probably why the sync is having some odd issues.

In our instructions for sharing a vault, step 1 will have you (or in this case, your client) create a folder within Dropbox, and share that folder with someone. The .agilekeychain will go in that folder, so it will also be shared with that person (i.e. you).

I think the best way to do this would be for you and your client to each disable Dropbox sync for that vault. Then your client will want to move Sigrun-Lynn.agilekeychain to its own folder within her Dropbox account, and share that folder with you. Then you can each re-enable Dropbox sync for that vault.

Once it is set up that way, it should work much more reliably for you. Please let us know how it all goes, and if you have any questions about that. :)

Thanks so much Drew. She did share a folder with me.
This is what it looks like in Dropbox.

Thing is - she knows how to use 1Password - she uses it on 5 devices and with other team members so I'm sure she did the right thing.

And we have re-done the whole process before. So this isn't likely to fix the issue :(

    Hi @uncommonsense,

Thanks again for the screenshot! I think my explanation about folders and the .agilekeychain may have been a little confusing - if so, I apologize! Please allow me to elaborate:

Your screenshot is from the Dropbox.com website, where Sigrun-Lynn.agilekeychain appears to be a regular folder. However, if you open the local Dropbox folder on your Mac (or your client's Mac) you'll notice Sigrun-Lynn.agilekeychain looks like a file, not a folder. Double-clicking on it will not open it like a normal folder - instead, it will open the 1Password app as if it was a single file. This is because it's a special kind of folder that is treated much like a file on Mac OS X, although it looks like a regular folder when viewed in a web browser (or from other operating systems like Windows).

On your Mac, you can only open a .agilekeychain like a folder by right-clicking on it and choosing "Show Package Contents". Applications work the same way on a Mac: .app files are really packages/bundles, just like .agilekeychain files. You can right-click on a .app file in the Applications folder and choose "Show Package Contents" to open it like a folder. The reason I'm explaining all this is to show that a .agilekeychain is different than a normal folder. Share a .agilekeychain directly via Dropbox will cause problems when syncing it with 1Password. However, sharing a normal folder that contains a .agilekeychain should work correctly.

So what your client will need to do is this:

    • Create a new folder inside her local Dropbox folder on her Mac (I'll refer to it as "New Folder").
    • Move Sigrun-Lynn.agilekeychain inside New Folder so the file path is now: ~/Dropbox/New Folder/Sigrun-Lynn.agilekeychain
    • Right-click on New Folder and select "Share This Folder..."
    • That will open her account on the Dropbox.com website and prompt her to invite someone to share that folder.

Now, in your latest message, it sounds like she moved the .agilekeychain inside a folder named 1Password which is inside her Dropbox folder (please correct me if I'm wrong). But I'm not sure if she shared that 1Password folder with you, or if either of you edited the sync settings in 1Password so the vault points to that keychain in its new location in Dropbox? If you're still having trouble, and you/she followed the steps I outlined above, please let us know exactly what happens. If you can send a new screenshot of your sync settings for that vault, it may help. Thanks!
