Problem accessing 1PW on laptop

I inadvertently installed a trial version of 1Password on my Mac laptop. The trial period expired and I am no longer able to gain access to the 1Password account that I purchased from iTunes on 8/16/14 and which works flawlessly on my iMac and iPhone.

In an attempt to solve the access problem on my laptop, I followed instructions on Agilebits’ website: On my laptop, I tried clicking 1Password5 > License > Add License. But there was no “Add License” that showed up in the dialogue box. This prevented me from adding my Agilbits license number.

    Hi @quincy888,

I'm a little hesitant at the moment, let me explain why. We currently sell 1Password on a per platform basis. So a 1Password licence for your Mac only covers you on OS X. Now we try to generous in that you can use that licence on as many Macs as you and even five other immediate family members in the same household have. What it doesn't cover you for though is on Windows or iOS. So I mention this because you said you purchased via iTunes. In regards to Apple's stores there is iTunes and the Mac App Store on your Mac. iTunes allows you to purchase iOS apps for your iOS devices while the Mac App Store is for Mac applications.

If it was just the wrong term used and you did indeed purchase from the Mac App Store then all you should need to do is download from the Mac App Store and 1Password will see your vault from the trial and copy it to the correct place for this version. You won't be asked for a licence because Mac App Store applications have no licences - everything is tied to your Apple ID. What I would strongly recommend doing is after downloading the Mac App Store version (which you can identify by its name 1Password.app) you move the AgileBits Store version (which you can identify by its name 1Password 5.app) to the Trash. The reason why I recommend this is you can accidentally keep two vaults and if you don't realise they would start to diverge over time and that's bad.

Now if you did purchase the pro features via our in-app purchase in 1Password for iOS that doesn't cover you I'm afraid for the Mac. The Mac is a separate platform and requires its own licence.

If you'd been a customer from our AgileBits Store you would have a licence and we could help you out. If you purchased via Apple though there is no licence and indeed Apple don't even inform us of any of the purchases so we never know about our Mac App Store customers until they come visit us in the forums.

So the first thing to do is confirm where you purchased 1Password from and for what platform. If the instructions above aren't enough please do post back and we'll help you sort all of this out

    Hello Agilbits,

Thanks for your detailed response. I am still, however, a bit confused. I now understand that a 1Password license for my iMac should cover both of my OSX computers (one for the iMac and the other for my Macbook Air). And to clarify matters for you, I bought a copy of 1PW from iTunes as part of a package that included the purchase of Parallels.

To get 1PW coverage on both my desktop and laptop computers, it looks like I will have to purchase a second 1Password application. At the moment, it is not altogether clear to me how to do so from either the Mac App Store or directly from Agilbits website. But what is clear is that I can click on the “Trial Expire” box on my laptop and purchase a “1Password 5 for Mac.”

Before doing so, I seek advice as to procedures I should take to avoid losing information currently in my 1Password account. (Perhaps vault is a better term than account). I certainly don’t want to create problems for myself in either the near term or longer run future by having two 1Password accounts/vaults !

    Hi @quincy888,

I'm now fairly confident that iTunes wasn't involved. Parallels have done offers in the past and we've been part of some of those bundles but only via the Parallels website which is at http://www.parallels.com. As we do sell one platform via iTunes I wanted to make sure.

I've yet to see the email that customers receive after their purchase of the Parallels bundle so I don't know what it looks like but the email, I believe, should have contained instructions on how to register your free 1Password licence. Once the website portion of the registration is complete we would send you an email with how to complete the registration process in the actual 1Password application.

So I don't believe you need another licence. It sounds like you have an AgileBits Store licence, or will do once the registration is complete and that single AgileBits Store licence will cover all of your Macs. The licence will also simply disable the trial mode meaning you just keep using 1Password with your existing vault and no risk at all of anything disappearing.

Do you still have the Parallels email I believe you should have received and does it mention any steps to complete in regards to 1Password? Please don't forget these are public forums if you feel it would be helpful to post snippets from the email as any keys or URLs may be specific to you (so you don't want them leaked). I'm confident we can get things resolved easily with no risk to your vault and no cost too

    Hello AgileBits,

Again, many thanks for your diagnosis and thoughtful response.

Let me begin by noting that
    1. the 1PW trial version on my laptop is named “1Password 5” and the name of the version on my desktop is simply “1Password.” This indicates to me that I did purchase 1PW from the Mac App Store and it suggests that your hunch that I have an AgileBits license is correct. I am hoping that this proves to be the case!
    2. my desktop already has 1Password installed on it. My laptop no longer has any version of AgileBits 1Password in the Application folder because, I’ve put “1Password 5” into the trash as you have suggested I do.

I am having difficulty following your instructions in your first response about downloading 1Password from the Mac App Store. My questions relate to the Mac App Store versions of 1PW, identified by its name “1Password.app”.

I was not able to find the 1Password.app in iTunes. So, I went to the AbileBits website, first on my laptop and then on my desktop, and got a bit disoriented.
    1. I did not see any link to download the Mac App Store version on AgileBits.com.
    2. I did, however, see a link to “uninstall 1password mac”. Should I uninstall 1Password on my desktop before re-installing? Won’t doing so remove all contents I’ve added to the program?
    3. Finally, how do I get the correct 1Password installed on both my laptop and my desktop?

Let me now provide you with some details obtained from the email receipt I received after having bought the Parallels/1Password package on the 8/15/14. I see this receipt identifies AgileBits as being the Seller of “1Password – Password Manager and Secure Wallet, v4.4.1 (4+)”. However, I see where the email contains the iTunes logo. So, possibly I had not purchased the package from Parallels.

FYI, the information located at the bottom of the receipt email I received.

Let me know if it will be necessary for me to buy a second 1Password application to get 1PW coverage on both my desktop and laptop computers. If so, I would, of course, find this to be irritating. The promotional material about the Parallels/1PW package did not provide information about the distinction between the two versions of 1Password.

Again, I certainly do not want to purchase a second 1Password if it is likely to create problems for myself in either the near term or longer run future by having two accounts/vaults !

I look kindly to your guidance further assistance. Many, many thanks!

    Hi @quincy888 ,

I'm sorry that this process has been a bit drawn out for you, and we do appreciate your patience as we work to figure out where things are getting tangled up.

First of all, let me assure you that if you have already purchased a desktop license, you certainly won't have to purchase again to cover additional computers. As Little Bobby mentions above, we try to be as generous as possible with our licensing, and making users pay twice for the same app just doesn't seem nice. ;)

Since you have 1Password.app installed on your iMac, you should be able to open the App Store on your laptop and locate 1Password in your purchase history. Please be sure that you are logged in to the App Store with the same Apple ID as you used when you originally purchased 1Password.

If you are not seeing 1Password in your purchase history, please send an email with your Parallels receipt details to support+forum@agilebits.com. Once we see that we might have better luck in tracking this down. :)

Problem solved! Many thanks, Megan, and also to "LittleBobbyTables" for directing me to the solution which I did not find to be obvious upon first reading. :)

    Hi @quincy888,

I apologise it took so long to get this resolved but I'm happy to hear we got there. I confess, I did forget that for a while Apple receipts all came from an iTunes email address, even if you purchased a Mac application from their Mac App Store. I believe they've taken steps to clear that up now thankfully and we've discovered why you were thinking iTunes

Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here on but should you have any questions or issues please do let us know
