1Password keeps telling me to delete non-existant Firefox extension

Every so often, for at least the past year now, I've been getting notifications from 1Password on my Mac that I need to delete the old 1Password extension from Firefox. The thing is, I did delete a long time ago, and I'm still getting these notifications. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

1Password Version: 5.3.1

    Hi @timdmackey,

I'm sorry you keep getting notifications about deleting the old extension from Firefox!

Can you please check the version of the 1Password extension currently installed in Firefox? To do that, open Firefox and go to Tools > Add-ons in the menu. In the list of extensions, do you see more than one copy of the 1Password extension? What is the version number for the 1Password extension(s)?

I also noticed your message says you're using version 5.3.1 of the main 1Password app. The latest update for the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac is 5.3.2, so you may want to install that update. It's probably not related to the message about the old extension, but it's a good idea to install the latest update anyway.

    Thanks!

Hi, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I checked my Firefox extensions and the version I have installed is '1Password 4.4.2'. that looked wrong since I expected it to be version 5-point-something, but when I deleted it and followed the link from 1Password, that's the same version that it prompted me to install. Is 4.4.2 the correct extension version?

FYI, I also updated to the newest version of 1Password, thanks for noticing that for me.

The 1P browser extension numbers are not the same as the 1P app numbers so the difference is nothing to worry about. You have the latest release version of the 1P browser extension.

    Hi @timdmackey,

As Stephen said, that's the correct/latest version of the 1Password extension, so no problem there. Have you received the notification about deleting the old extension since removing & reinstalling the latest one?

Hi @Drew_AG, I got the message again just now when logging into my machine. Firefox is still reporting the new version installed.

Thanks @timdmackey, that's certainly strange! The next time you see that message, would you be able to take a screenshot of it? To include it in your reply, simply click the document button in the top of the comment field, and select the file you wish to share:

Being able to see the message might help us understand what's going on. Thanks!

I've actually done so already, so here it is! If you're wondering what the text is beneath the window, I took the screenshot with my windows zoomed out in Mission Control, so that's just the window name.

    Hi @timdmackey,

I can only think of two possibilities at the moment.

    1. Do you have more than one user account logged on at the moment on your Mac and you're using Fast User Switching to jump between them? WebSockets aren't contained to to just that user space so I believe if another account is running the old extension 1Password can't tell that it isn't your copy of Firefox.
    2. The other option is this profile is a bit gnarled up. You can find your Firefox profile in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/ and there will be a folder that ends in .default with a random string as the prefix. Inside that folder there is another titled extensions. What files do you see that contain the word onepassword?

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this mystery

@littlebobbytables, looks like #1 was the issue! There's another user account on this computer which is not used as often, and that user account had an older version of the extension installed. The fact that the other user is only logged in occasionally would explain why this message only came up some of the time.

Thanks for your help! This problem has been nagging at me for a long time, but it was small enough that I never got around to asking for a solution to it.

I'm glad we could get that resolved for you @timdmackey  Hopefully it's all smooth sailing from here but if not we'll do our best to be as useful in resolving the next one
