Due to restrictions by Apple, 1PW from AgileBits cannot perform iCloud sync. This is clearly stated on the purchase page (but could be made even clearer). If you want iCloud sync, you must use the version from the App Store.

If you have not yet purchased and are using the trial, just switch. If you purchased from AgileBits no more than thirty days ago, you can get a refund and purchase from the App Store.

If you bought more than thirty days ago, you will have to use Dropbox sync. In fact, this does have some technical advantages over iCloud, and is used by many people, including most AgileBits staff.

I purchased it more than thirty days ago, but I don't want to buy the software again just to be able to use it with iCloud. Its also important to note that I wasn't warned about that anywhere when I was deciding to buy it or not. Can you arrange this for me? I really need to use iCloud sync.

    Hi @pacrat52,

We try our best to make it very clear that the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 is required to use iCloud Sync. As far as I know, it is noted everywhere that iCloud Sync is mentioned on our websites...

...including right in our AgileBits Store where we sell the license:

We also have this article outlining the differences:

Should I buy 1Password from the AgileBits Store or the Mac App Store?

I'm truly sorry that you were unaware of this limitation, and that it was more than 30 days after the purchase before you realized it. If you saw iCloud Sync listed as a feature of 1Password 5 somewhere with no mention of the Mac App Store requirement, please do let us know (with a link), as we'd like to correct that right away.

However, the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 5 does include another secure, convenient cloud sync option: Dropbox. It's how I have always synced my 1Password data, and many of my AgileBits colleagues do as well. 1Password is secure by design and your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted by your Master Password, so with regard to security there's no difference between syncing 1Password data with Dropbox or iCloud. 1Password simply doesn't depend on the security of either to protect your data.

Dropbox also has the advantage that it can be used to share vaults with friends, family, and co-workers, whereas it's not currently possible to share anything between iCloud accounts. And it's the only single sync solution that works across all 1Password platforms: Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.

If you don't want to purchase 1Password from the Mac App Store (and I completely understand why you wouldn't want to buy it again); I hope you'll consider Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync.

I don't want to use Dropbox and I don't want to buy the app again. I want a way to Sync my mobile and desktop without worrying and setting up external apps or functionalities. Can you fix this problem for me or should I consider Dashlane?

    @kundi,

If you're syncing 1Password between a single desktop computer and one or more iOS or Android devices, then you can use Wi-Fi sync. Once you've done the initial configuration on each device (which is done completely within 1Password, no other apps required), all you'll need to do to sync your data again is open 1Password on your Mac and your mobile device at the same time while they are on the same Wi-Fi network. On iOS, your data will then automatically sync over Wi-Fi. On Android, sync can be triggered using “pull to refresh” or by tapping “Sync” in the overflow menu.

If this option is unacceptable as well, please email us at support+forums@agilebits.com with a link to this thread, and we'll see if there may be anything else we can do to help you get what you want out of 1Password.

Indeed, the best option will always be to let us know you need iCloud Sync when you purchase 1Password for Mac in the first place, if you discover that that iCloud isn't an option there (in the AgileBits Store version), as we can easily issue a refund (and will happily do so) within the 30 days of purchase.

I think we've all suffered from "buyer's remorse" at one time or another, and likewise sometimes we simply make mistakes and buy one thing thinking it is something else (which seems to be the case with the AgileBits Store version as opposed to Mac App Store). However, there are sane limits on the timeframe during which refunds may be processed, so we offer a 30 day money back guarantee as a courtesy, both for you and the rest of our awesome customers, to offer some leeway. I think this is important, but certainly once you've used 1Password for a month (and then some) without the need for support or a refund, it's safe to say that if it's working for you to that degree you're getting value out of it.

But more importantly we realize that there is no one-size-fits-all sync solution, so we offer a few options. As Vee mentioned, however, Apple simply does not allow apps purchased outside of their stores to use iCloud Sync, so we aren't able to offer this particular option in the AgileBits Store version of 1Password. I do hope that they'll remove this restriction someday, but for the time being it is what it is. And Dropbox and Wi-Fi Sync are great alternatives.

So to summarize, there are a number of options here that anyone in this situation can exercise:

    • Purchase the appropriate version of 1Password (platform, features, etc.)
    • (Within 30 days) request a refund if you find that you've purchased a different version in error
    • Don't sync your 1Password data (not everyone needs or wants to, after all!)
    • Use an alternative sync method

But again it's entirely up to the individual in each case whether or they you choose to do so, since we don't presume to try to make these kinds of decisions for our customers. As always, it's important to make a purchase based on the features a product has, not those that one hopes it might offer in the future. After all, they're your hard-earned dollars and you're entitled to spend them as you see fit! :)
