My laptop died and I can not access my passwords

Hello, My main work laptop (a macbook air) met an untimely death this week. I am trying to set up the 1password on my personal laptop a Macbook pro as well as my iPhone and iPad. The iPhone and IPad had been working, but I upgraded around the same time as the air accidental death and now none of my devices can get my passwords and I am in a bind. I am not 100% sure where I backed up my data. I thought it was a server provided my agile, but perhaps I am wrong as I don't see that option. It could be cloud, but I can not find the data on my cloud, or dropbox. Help!

Can you please tell me what to do so I can reaches my passwords?

Thanks,
Inge

    Hi @imilde,

My condolences for your loss! It's always sad when a hard drive is taken from us before its time. :(

AgileBits does not store, sync, or have any access to your 1Password data whatsoever, so we definitely don't have it, but we can help you narrow down the search.

I searched our sales records for your email address and found that you bought a license for 1Password 5 for Mac from our AgileBits Store. iCloud sync is only available in the Mac App Store version of the software, so unless you bought it twice, I don't think you synced your data to iCloud. Not from your Mac, anyway.

If you synced your data with Dropbox, you should be able to find for a file in there called 1Password.agilekeychain (unless you manually changed the name of that file), either at the top level, or within a folder called 1Password. If you have more than one Dropbox account, be sure to check them all.

The iPhone and IPad had been working, but I upgraded around the same time as the air accidental death and now none of my devices can get my passwords...

The laptop crash should not have erased any data from your iOS devices, so I have a few follow-up questions here:

    • Were your iOS devices syncing 1Password with your MacBook Air and/or each other, so that you had all the same logins/data available on each device?
    • What did you upgrade, 1Password or the iOS operating system?
    • What happens when you open 1Password on your iOS devices now?
    • Did you make any iTunes backups from either of your iOS devices before the upgrade?

Thanks in advance for these answers. They'll help us guide you toward what to do next. We'll do our best to help you recover your data!

I checked my drop box account and can not find a backup there.

At one point all my devices where synching. I can not recall the order of events, but it is likely that an upgrade made them no longer synch and I tried to upgrade 1password to help with synch issues.

Is it possible that the passwords were saved the the computer hard drive itself?
I checked my most recent external drive back up and found an old 1password backup from Dec. 2014.
I am sure I backed up more recently. Regardless, I have used this backup for now.

I had a lot of logins saved...I really need to figure out where they are now and how to get all my devices back up and synched (or at least my laptop which is where I do most of my logging in).

Why is there two different versions of the software with different features - Agilebits purchase vs. App Store?
Ideally I would like to synch with icloud. If I had, then this issue would probably not be occurring. Is there a way to make my current version synch with icloud?

@imilde: No. While only the version of 1Password from the Mac App Store supports iCloud Sync, otherwise the AgileBits Store version is identical. Since we have both customers who prefer to purchase software through the App Store and through AgileBits directly, we offer both options; but Apple only allows apps purchased through them to use iCloud.

If you would like to use the version of 1Password from the Mac App Store, you would either need to pay full price (not ideal, I know) or wait for the next sale. Unfortunately, Apple provides no way for us (or any developer) to offer discounts or upgrade pricing on the App Store. This is true on both Mac and iOS, and it applies to all apps. It would be great if there was a way around this, but at this time there is not. Maybe Apple will change this in the future. So while you won't be able to 'switch' to the Mac App Store version, Dropbox is a sync option you can use instead. It's what I prefer, personally, since it's a bit more flexible than iCloud.

But in the end, iCloud is just another sync option, and works similarly to Dropbox. Much like Dropbox, if you delete data from iCloud, you may not be able to recover it. They are not backup services; they are sync services.

Is it possible that the passwords were saved the the computer hard drive itself? I checked my most recent external drive back up and found an old 1password backup from Dec. 2014.

If you have a full backup from your computer, you can locate your 1Password vault itself — probably named 1Password.agilekeychain. That said, in Dropbox you would also have your vault and unless it was deleted, you would still be able to retrieve it from there. So while I'm glad you at least have found a backup to restore from, it may be worth looking into. Please let me know what you find. I look forward to hearing back from you! :)
