Buying version 4 due to being on Mavericks, but wanting to upgrade once El Capitan comes out.

Hello there! Firstly, let me say WOW! I just switched to 1Password from Lastpass, and the difference is so starkly contrasted, it's not even funny. I pretty much instantly hated Lastpass for many reasons and have not been able to find a single thing that does not completely thrill me about your software. On to my question...

I am currently on Mavericks because I didn't want to upgrade to Yosemite. So, I can only use 1Password 4 at the moment. However, I am planning to upgrade to El Capitan as soon as it's available. So, my question is, if I buy a license for version 4 now, if I want to upgrade to version 5 after I upgrade to El Capitan, will I have to buy another license?

Thanks,

steiney

    Hi @steiney,

Firstly, let me say THANK YOU! :chuffed: It's awesome to hear that you're so happy with 1Password! We're very glad it meets (dare I say exceeds?) your expectations.

And I have good news for you! 1Password for Mac uses the same license file for versions 4 and 5 (because v5 was a free upgrade from v4). So all you'll need to buy is the license for 1Password 5, and you can use it on both versions.

If iCloud sync is something you think you'll want from 1Password at any point, then you should buy 1Password from the Mac App Store rather than from our AgileBits Store; currently, Apple only allows apps sold in its store to access iCloud. Otherwise, there's no major difference in the two versions, and both have Dropbox and Wi-Fi sync options.

Here's a quick comparison, to help you make an educated decision before you buy:

Should I buy 1Password from the AgileBits Store or the Mac App Store?

This is specifically about version 5, as v4 doesn't currently have access to iCloud, but I thought it worth mentioning because of your plans to upgrade to 5. Both versions (4 and 5) have Dropbox sync capability, though, which is what I use and is just as good, if not better in certain ways.

Thanks for making the switch to 1Password, and let us know if there's anything else we can help you with!

Indeed, it does exceed my expectations! To be honest, I started off with Lastpass Premium, as I said. I wasn't happy, so I started searching for an alternative. I found some good options, but nothing that really worked the way I wanted it to. I had stayed away from 1Password because of the price, but I finally decided to take a look at it. After five minutes with the software, I was suddenly willing to pay the price! :) You guys hit the ball way out of the park. Everything is very well laid out, and it all works perfectly and seamlessly. Cross-platform syncing is ridiculously fast. The app runs so light weight, it displays 0.0 in the energy usage monitor. And the website and supporting documentation are top notch.

I'll definitely be writing a positive review in the app store.

That's great news about the licenses. Problem solved there.

I don't use iCloud for anything but the "Find My iDevice" feature, so no need to buy from the App Store. I buy directly from the developer whenever possible. But thanks for the heads up.

    Thanks again!

@steiney: Wow! I can't say that we get many compliments on 1Password's low energy usage, but I think it's fantastic that you noticed. And our design and docs teams will be thrilled to hear your praise. But in the end, we couldn't do what we do without the support of you and the rest of our awesome customers. Thank you! We're here if you need us.

@brenty Well you're certainly welcome! I've been using the software for a few days now and I'm thoroughly impressed. :)

I was wondering about using multiple vaults at the same time and came across this closed thread where someone was wondering the same thing. The last post was just about passing a note about it along to the developers.

So, just wanted to cast my vote for creating a feature like that, if you wouldn't mind passing it along. It would be a nice option. I'm aware of the keyboard shortcuts for switching between vaults which really make it not that bad, but it would just be nice to have the option to eliminate that extra set of keystrokes. I realize it can be looked at as a security issue, so that's why it would be nice to have a password protected toggle.

I run a business, so I have my personal vault plus a separate vault that's shared with my business partner and shares all the business' accounts, protected date, etc., so with 1Password keeping them totally separate, I'm switching back and forth between vaults all day long, which adds up to a lot of extra keystrokes! The currently workaround is for me to create a folder in my primary vault for my business and copy all the passwords into it, so the complete set of data can be accessed from my primary vault. The only real annoyance about this is when something changes in the master data set, it obviously doesn't push the update to the folder I set up in the primary vault, so I have to remember to do it manually or I'll end up forgetting and have to do it the first time I try to login in after a password change, etc.

So, not a big deal, but I just thought I'd point it out and make the suggestion.

Thank you for your feedback and suggestion, @steiney! We're always trying to improve our user experience, and that's based largely on the feedback we get from our users, so we really appreciate it. :)

I'll be more than happy to add your vote to our internal tracker. As time goes on and more customers are using multiple vaults, this is being requested more often. It's definitely something we'd like to do, and I'll be extremely surprised if we don't add this feature - the only question is when. I don't have a timeframe, but I'd also really like to have that feature, and so would many others here, so I'll be sure to give our developers an extra nudge. ;)

If you need anything else, just let us know!
