Hi, my laptop died, how can I find my 1password data?

Unfortunately my laptop (Mac Airbook) died. I will let someone check if my hard drive can be fixed, but in the mean time I really need my 1password data. I have made a backup on an external drive about 100 days ago, other than that I never synced my data with iCloud or Dropbox (I cannot find it on Dropbox). Can you check if my data are somewhere 'in the cloud'? My account is either on my name or purchased on my father's. I hope you can help me out! Thanks.

Hi @Juul,

I'm sorry to hear about the problems with your Mac! I'm glad you have a backup on an external drive, even if it's an old one - if you don't have newer 1Password data anywhere else, you should at least be able to restore from that backup.

Can you check if my data are somewhere 'in the cloud'?

By default, all your 1Password data is stored locally on the device unless you choose to enable one of the sync options (iCloud, Dropbox, Folder sync, Wi-Fi), or create a backup somewhere else (like your external drive). 1Password never sends your password data to us, so we don't have a copy of it, and we have no way of knowing if you had ever synced your data to any cloud service.

I never synced my data with iCloud or Dropbox (I cannot find it on Dropbox).

If you never used the Dropbox sync option in 1Password, you wouldn't have any of your 1Password data there. I'm assuming you don't use 1Password on any other devices? If you do happen to have your 1Password data somewhere else (like on an iOS device or another Mac) you can get that data back - but if you never used any sync options, it sounds like you only had your 1Password data on that one Mac.

So it sounds like the backup you mentioned is your best bet, if you don't have your 1Password data anywhere else. Assuming you were using 1Password 4 or 5 on your Mac, the following article should help explain where you can find your data within the backup on your external drive: Where does 1Password store its data?

Does that help at all? If you're having trouble finding your data on the external drive, please let us know some more information about that - for example, is that a Time Machine backup?

You're right, that 'backup everything' lesson is valuable - and a lesson we often only learn after we need a backup. (Which I know from personal experience.
